“I do not believe capital can afford to permit hunger, squalor, or disease. Let us banish the city miserable before we build our city beautiful. Slums are political malaria breeders, and we must not have them in our midst.”

Reverend Pansy Graham Introduced Today's Speaker: Judge Frank Shephard

Topic: Gratitude: Reflections of what we owe to our country.

Judge Shephard was born and raised in Palm Beach County, Fl. He received his B.A. cum laude from the U of F in 1968. In 1970, he received a Master of Arts Degree in Government from the University of Massachusetts, and he was awarded his juris doctor from the University of Michigan Law School in 1972. Judge Shephard is a member of the Florida Bar, the District of Columbia Bar and the Dade County Bar Association. He is also a member of the United States District Court for the Southern, Middle and Northern Districts of Florida, the 11th circuit court of appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

Judge Shephard shared with us some of his thoughts with regards to whether or not 1955 was a better time in our country compared to 2005. President Eisenhower had been elected and life was simpler however our nation faced segregation and bigotry particularly in the south. The wake of last years hurricane highlighted the poverty that still exists today.  Military service for much of this time was mandatory for young men not attending a school of higher learning. The Judge also related some of his thoughts with respect to providing a non mandatory National Service which would allow those between the ages of 18 to 21 to participate in community service for a modest compensation and assistance in their college tuition. He explained this idea was derived from the book by William F Buckley, entitled: "Gratitude: Reflections on What We Owe Our Country"

Next Weeks Speaker: Joseph Adler, Producing Artistic Director, Gablestage
