THEME
2009-2010
We welcome all our
visitors…
We’re happy because…
IT’S A NEW DECADE!
Wendy’s family shopped in S. Miami and
saw a ticket on their windshield saying “the meter was red as time expired
in the rush of the season we knew you’d be tired, a parking ticket would
make you feel blue and in this season of good cheer it just wouldn’t do…”
Next December I won’t have to pay
my parking meters – Brett

January
05, 2010 to my dear special family... i am deeply sorry for your
tremendous loss - sid was a husband, father, grandfather, sibling, friend,
passionate car lover, collector, bargain maker, someone who smiled a lot
... i send you all my comfort, solace, peace, love, and friendship during
this most difficult and trying time. it is at all times painful to lose
someone you love, but i believe that happening during holiday season and
more specifically new year's eve adds an additional layer of sadness and
sorrow. Please know that you are loved so very much... while i can't always
be a physical presence do know that you are always in my heart and in my
thoughts. with love and peace and warmth...

Dear Sybil, Even though we only knew Sid for a few years,
his larger then life and warm personality will be always be remembered by
us.
Eddie & Harriet Rice (Toronto),
Toronto, Ontario January 03, 2010
Dear Sybil - it has been a few years.
There are no words.
Sid was a good man - he always had a smile and a kind word to share.
You were both so friendly and open to me at any events where we crossed
paths. That meant more than you'll ever realize.
I will always remember Sid with great fondness.

CATHY MILLER for the Rotary
International Foundation:
We pledged to RI that this club
would support the RI foundation by sending $6450.00.
RI’s operating budget comes from the
interest accrued on this money for three years in a row. Then ½ of the
money is sent back to the district it came from in the form of district
simplified grants. The other ½ of the money goes abroad for international
projects.
RYE is just one
of the projects funded by RI Foundation
President Pansy encourages all of
our club members to support this to our fullest. Matching
contributions up to $150.

TREMBLY:
Marty Ed, Bob, and Brett are
hitting the streets to talk to shop owners about sponsorships of $250 and
$500 to help to support the festival.
The goal is to ask for SMALL
donations since there are different levels of giving. The $100, $250 and
$500 levels all offer different perks. Coverage will be the Shops of
Sunset and surrounding streets.
If you miss a
meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the
missed meeting date.
For online
make-ups:
Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club
to make up an absence.
Attendance
credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an
alternative to making up a meeting at another club.
To
earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of
subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.
How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?
Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with
computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary
Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way
to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year,
Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of
these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting
programs and applied for make-up credit.
It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the
website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by
the principles of the 4 Way Test).
1. Read a variety of current articles in the programs
section and/or choose articles from the Archived Programs list and/or
information from the Avenues of Service pages. You will be required to
answer questions. There is space on the makeup request form for up to three
articles to be reviewed, however you will need to read more than three to
meet your 30 minute visit obligation.
2. At the end of your 30 minute visit, click on
Make-up Request Form from the drop-down menu at the top of the page OR the
bottom of each make-up program.
3. Read the Makeup Request Form carefully, and follow
instructions. The form will appear once you press the SUBMIT button (one
time only) and an email copy will be sent to the email address you proved.
This can be forwarded to your club secretary so your attendance records are
properly updated.
Members in eClub One are
usually experienced Rotarians who are unable to belong to a traditional
club because they reside in a remote location or they are engaged in a
demanding travel schedule. Those applying for membership in eClub One must
provide an endorsement from their current District Governor, current Rotary
club President, along with letters of reference from two Rotarian
colleagues of their current club..
eClub One has standard requirements for memberships,
including charges for dues and administrative fees. Participants also must
be willing to take part regularly in the Rotary eClub One community by
taking on tasks and responsibilities. Members are required to also have
regular access to the Internet and be willing to acquire the necessary
skills to participate in the activities of Rotary eClub One.
Rotary and eClub One are on the cutting edge of the
technology age. How this evolves will only be determined by periodic
evaluation and the involvement of its members. For today, however, it is an
outstanding tool for Rotarians to makeup missed meetings and keep in touch
with Rotary happenings throughout the world.

The mission of Rotary
International, a worldwide association of Rotary clubs, is to provide
service to others, to promote high ethical standards, and to advance world
understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business,
professional, and community leaders.
THE 4-WAY TEST OF THE THINGS
WE THINK, SAY OR DO:
Is it the TRUTH?
Will it build GOODWILL and
BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to
all concerned?"

Asst. Club Programming Chair Roy
Gonas introduced today’s speaker, first discussing this first Rotary
assignment by Otto Fuentes. He was on the panel to chose a candidate for
the district Rotary Scholarship and one of the candidates who won the
scholarship that year was…
Dr. Claudia Valderrama
former Rotary Scholar and veterinarian
This Rotary scholarship
opened her eyes and her mind to another culture enabling her to challenge
herself to things she may have thought impossible.
She took English high
school classes while living in Colombia but was still afraid of
conversational English. A few months in this country in a local
high school taught her the language quickly. She decided on Spain
as her destination for school due to her fluency in Spanish.
A Rotarian named Robert
Levin met her while she waited tables at the Unicorn in NMB. He’s
very active in the district. He would read science magazines and she’d
talk to him about current news. His interest in her, changed her
life. His reputation got her an interview at the district level.
She was one of two
who won the award that year. Two awards had never been co-awarded
before.
She’d finished two
years of community college in the US when she left for veterinary school
in Spain.
Adventures included
meeting nine other students and then being invited to Morocco - a place
she’d never thought she’d see in her lifetime.
All scholarship money
was spent on travel and living expenses because the classes were
free. Upon returning to the US, she was able to complete veterinary
classes utilizing the background information learnt in Spain.
The Spaniards
thought she was from the Canary Islands.
January marks the
time when new online applications for the Rotary District’s Scholarship
program are accepted. Be alert to people who you think may want to be
sponsored to go abroad. Students must have completed two years of
college and NOT be related to a Rotarian.
