New Year’s Resolution…
First, I resolve to ask at least two non-Rotarian individuals to accompany me as my guest to a Rotary club meeting between now and March 31st. It is my hope that at least one of those people will see the work that Rotary clubs are doing, will meet the outstanding Rotarians at the club, and will want to become a part of an organization that is “Leading the Way” toward a better world.

Ed Mattson, member of the Mishawaka, IN Rotary Club discussing "Rotary on an INTERNATIONAL LEVEL – Hands Across the Sea".

To set the stage and to gain appreciation for international projects, the itinerary is very broad-based and contains important information for every Rotarian:
1. Rotary is more than "local projects".
2. Why we have it so good in the US
3. Some of the latest cancer treatments available here in the US and taking them into the 3rd world.
4. Why Rotary is the best organization to change the world.
5. A look at the need for humanitarian aid in underdeveloped countries, and utilizing Rotary resources to make international projects easier.
6. Partnering with and sponsoring new Rotary Clubs in third world countries
7. A brief look at three current projects in Eastern Europe where Rotary's growth has been a phenominal 16%.

"This is the most informative program we have ever heard at a club meeting and we have certainly gained a greater respect for what Rotary is all about".   Rob Ketron, PDG District 7620
"The information presented certainly opened my eyes and has allowed me to gain more insight into my battle with breast cancer"  Liz Garcia, Member Santa Maria, CA Rotary

Final Exits: The Illustrated Encyclopedia of How We Die

Biography
Our guest is a transplant from New York where his father was a NYC Homicide Detective,  has to his credit four published books.  The first three were mysteries.  For more than a decade he has collected statistics on death and dying culminating in this book.
From Amazon.com:

“I've been collecting statistics and information on the American way of dying for over a decade. This is my first nonfiction; I previously published three novels. HarperCollins did such a superb job designing Final Exits and spared no expense by including over 400 pictures and historical artworks that I discovered in archives from around the world. I hope it is as fascinating to the reader as it was for me to write. I gathered the information from over fifty governments agencies, archives, insurance documents, hospital and court records that cannot be found by the Googler eager to verify or debunk. I've included a 60 page appendix/bibliography with links, articles and books that will help those interested in the subject find out even more.”

In 1750, there were only 100 ways to die, currently that figure is over 3,000 and growing daily.  In the 1700’s, the #1 cause for dying:  Convulsions.

Book Description from Amazon.com
We're all going to die—it's in the contract—but how will it happen? Today, although we live longer, people are killed by everything—bad words, bloodletting, flying cows, frozen toilets, hiccups, laughing, and spontaneous combustion are some of the unexpected causes. According to death certificates, in 1700 there were less than one hundred causes of death. Now there are more than three thousand. In the eye-opening and addictive Final Exits, causes of death—bizarre or common—are alphabetically arranged and include actual accounts of people, both famous and ordinary, who died in their own particular way.
Thoroughly researched, with uncanny historical detail covering burial customs, famous last words, and more than four hundred medical and historical illustrations from throughout the ages, Final Exits is more than just a trivia book. It is a portrait in words and numbers of human fate.
