ANNOUNCEMENTS

Football Mania: John Sorgie reported that this year's Football mania was the best ever netting the Club $3,492, if the remaining winners don't cash their checks before he closes the account.

Maxene Graham is now recuperating at home and would appreciate hearing from fellow Rotarians.  So pick up the phone, say hello and let her know she's missed.

President Ellen announced the Club's Garage Sale date will be Saturday, April 8 at her home.  As she must work on Saturdays, volunteers will be needed to help set up the display, man the till and assist in selling & loading sold merchandise into the customer's vehicle.  Contributions to the garage sale may be delivered to Ellen's home anythime AFTER March 8.

The MS Walkathon is scheduled for April 1, and Club members are encouraged to participate, sonsor a walker or advertise as a show of support.

As you learned last week, Rotary Exchange Student Florian Abrail has returned to France.  As he was scheduled to relocate to Mike Newman's home and, because the RC of Coconut Grove was unable to provide housing for their exchange student Ilaria Rundeddu of Clagliari, Italy on the island of Sardinia, she will be hosted by Dr. Mike while the financial support will continue to be from the RC of Coconut Grove.  Members are encouraged to include Ilaria in events and opportunities to explore the South Florida community.  As Dr. Mike will be visiting his RYE son Eric in Brazil on April 1 thru 7, a host family will be needed for that week.

The State of the City Address  for the City of South Miami will be Monday, January 23, at 6:00PM.  The Club will have a table of eight and space is still available as six members have already committed.

Nominations for District Governor 2008-09 are open.  Those members whose names were suggested all declined.

The inbound Scottish GSE Team will arrive in Miami on Saturday, April 8.

“I do not believe capital can afford to permit hunger, squalor, or disease. Let us banish the city miserable before we build our city beautiful. Slums are political malaria breeders, and we must not have them in our midst.”

 Paul P. Harris

Program Chair Reverend Pansy Graham Introduced Today's Speaker: Joseph Adler, Producing Artistic Director for the Gables Stage.

Adler studied drama at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University and earned his undergraduate degree in film from NYU.  He is a five time winner of the prestigious Carbonell Award for directing and the George Abbott award for "Outstanding Achievement in the Arts."  Prior to joining the Gables Stage, he directed TV commercials where he also won the highly coveted Clio.  The Gables Stage, located at the Biltmore Hotel, focuses on new and successful Broadway drama, which can be enjoyed by children, and produces six performances each season.  The theater company has staged 84 performances before more than 40,000 Public School students as a way of inspiring young people to take an interest in the Arts.  Joe pointed out that Dade County, through its Cutural Arts Council, is a big supporter of the arts and serves as a model for many communities around the nation.  Currently featured is Address Unknown, a play set in the early 1930's about two German friends living in the US - one Jewish and the other not.  The non-Jew returns to Germany,  joins the National Socialist Party and the friendship erodes due to anti-Semitism.
