Inbound GSE Team from the Phillipines

The Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for business people and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. RI District 6990 is looking for 5 GSE team members for this year’s trip to Quezon City in the Philippines, which is RI District 3780. Deadline for applications is December 8th, 2008. Click here for application form. For more information, contact GSE Chair Yolanda (Yoli) Woodbridge at 305-301-5024 or email her.

Interested in putting together a fundraiser? Contact Club Service Chair Linda Kaplan at lk@lindakaplane.com

After attending the Jr. Orange Bowl Parade, where crazy active guys in little cars showered him water from squirt guns .Programming Chair Darryl Downs got interested in the Shriners.  Today  he introduced…

.

Shiner Lenny Ettinger
Ettinger Associates
Healthcare – Business – Consulting
7951 Via Villagio,  West Palm Beach, FL  33412
561-514-6099 / 305-790-4242 cell

In 2010, Lenny will celebrate his 60 year member anniversary!

Each day the cost to run the 22 Shriner Hospitals $9 million per day to run the 22 Shriner hospitals.

Started hospitals in 1922 and now they have 22 hospitals
3 burn centers  - every single dept for a 50-60 bed facility

Everyone contributes to the hospitals.  Through the years, they’ve accumulated money through profits from an endowment fund of $8 billion (at one time)

Shriners have 500,000 current members.  In Miami last year we took in 110 new members.

We accept any child, any race, any age – it makes no difference

Each Shrine must transport the patient from their area to the nearest facility.  In Florida that hospital is in Tampa.  There are two vans in Miami and one in Ft. Lauderdale.  We pay for air ambulances for burn victims. Members who participate are called road runner volunteers.

Once there, they see the physician for the determination to see if the hospital can provide treatment for their malady.

A cleft palate – needs 5 specialists.
Other ailments that can be helped at a Shriner’s Hospital include:
Spina bifita

Toe walkers
Spinal rehab since 1980
Scoliosis,

brittle bone disease

Juvenile  rheumatoid arthritis

Cerebral palsy

Scoliosis

Burns – contraction of skin, scarring, deformities, port wine stains, congenital ear deformitites

Prosthetics until the age of 18 plus rehabilitation to use the limbs

This year they’ve help treat 1 million children.

The Shriners just expanded into Mexico City.  Many hospitals are being rebuilt next to medical schools.

PROCESS:
~200-250 children per week apply to each Temple.

~The application comes first from the parent.

~The doctors at the hospital review, board of directors vote on approval if we are medically qualified to handle the case.

~We don’t care if they are insured or uninsured.

~We get no money from the government or demand insurance coverage.

Of 325 patients per month, we turn away 8 or 9 because our facilities are not equipped for their care.

Offered services to the returning veterans – but the question of whose patient belongs to whom with the V.A. has kept this offer from being accepted.

Once a child is taken in, any of their issues are covered.
The typical cost of care  is $250,000 per patient once they are in the system

Out patient costs may make the hospital costs come downward.

At the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade – there is a strong presence for the Shriners.

To be a Shriner, you must first become a Mason.  You must believe in a God to be a Mason.  Other than that basic premise, there is no religion in Masonry.  Any religion is accepted.

History tidbit:

All of George Washington’s officers were Masons.  The fraternity goes back to the building of King Solomon’s tomb – those workers formed the Masons.

It is a brotherhood of Man – you help your brother and respect his life.

Criteria for accepting the sick chidren?

We take any child and pay for the medical portion of their care, transportation with a parent, at the hospital there is a room for a parent to stay.

Our hospitals have the smallest infection rate for surgical patients in the country.

Masons are all men.
Affiliated group is called Ladies of the Nile – and other associated groups for the ladies.

We will be meeting next Tuesday during inauguration day. We’ll TRY to have a television set for broadcasting.
