DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘CAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

http://www.rotary.org/newsroom/downloadcenter/pdfs/eclub_list.pdf

Visit www.rotary6990.org to find a club to make up an absence. Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club. To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

For make-ups anywhere around the world when traveling internationally: http://rotary.org/support/clubs/index.html

  Mr. Patrick Declan Murphy, L.C.S.W.

Miami Vet Center

8280 Northwest 27 Street Suite 511

Doral, FL  33122

(305) 859-8387 (VETS)

http://www.vetcenter.va.gov/

8:00am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday

Mr. Murphy services all combat/conflict veterans and their families in Dade and Monroe Counties.  He is a team leader and readjustment counselor.  He is social worker and the Team Leader in the Miami Veterans Center.  Mr. Murphy is a licensed clinical social worker.

The Center was created by congressional action to serve combat veterans and their families upon the return of the military family member from deployment.  Addressed are those with combat trauma having post traumatic stress syndrome.  Mr. Murphy said about 50% of returning combat personnel have PTSD and about 30% have an advance case which is deemed severe.

Vet Centers provide readjustment counseling and outreach services to all veterans who served in any combat zone. Services are also available for their family members for military related issues. Veterans have earned these benefits through their service and all are provided at no cost to the veteran or family.

Multiple deployments and not knowing with certainty when one’s deployment will end add to the stress.  Formerly, truck drivers were not combat personnel and have been filled by women.  Now, in confronting a different type of enemy, women personnel are also at high risk due to military vehicles being targets for bombings.

The local Center has treated about 5,000 persons.  Many have resisted obtaining counseling.  Families have played a key role in getting the military family member counseled.  Such personnel have an extremely high rate of divorce.  When counseled, however, the prospect of keeping the family unit in tact is quite high.

Mr. Murphy’s Q & A session lasted nearly as long as his presentation.  Time was afforded to accommodate the expressed interest from club members.
