QUOTE DU JOUR:

"Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It's not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; it's when you've had everything to do and you've done it.

Prez. Ellen introduced today's speaker:

Cindy David, Horticulturalist and Landscape Lecturer and Designer.

cdavid2649@aol.com

Cindy is a native of Miami who has been in the plant business for 25 years.  She is President of the Southern Tropical Growers Association and works to produce the AgFiesta at the Fruit and Spice Park each June.

What is the difference between a perennial and an annual?

Why does Home Depot sell plants that won't grow in humid and sunny South Florida?

Why does my flowering shrub not flower in Northern exposure?

Plants that are annuals may live as little as 2-3 weeks in our climate.  Most are meant for temperate zones - that don't have such high moisture in which fungus, snails and molds thrive so well.

The best plants are the ones that are bred for this environment:  croutons, red pentas, porterweed, plumbago to name a few.  Only remember:  plant each plant for the amount of sun it needs. A flowering bush won't flower in deep shade.

Winter is our dry season.  Plants are dorment or very slow growing now.  Do not fertilize until March!

If you wish to hear more about appropriate plants for Zone 10-B, she will be speaking at the Coral Gables famers Market on Saturday, January 21.  Topic: Xeriscape Gardening.

Upcoming Speakers:

January 17th:  Dr. Steve Liebowitz on "Wisdom at Work - Successful Strategies & Learning Experiences"

January 31st:  Alixon Smyth on Operation Smile

February 7th:  Dianne Raulson & Kathleen Fisher, on "Learning Through Listening"
