Today’s speaker was introduced by …Programming Chair Roy Gonas who indicated  that our speaker was impressed with our welcoming song so she’s our members offering FIU scholarships.  Roy let her know we hire our talent out to the community. J

Dr. Kathleen Wilson, Director,
FIU School of Music
www.music.fiu.edu

Dr. Wilson is an asset to FIU, and brings her magnificent soprano, as well as an impressive reputation to benefit our community.  Impressed with our value statement – the 4 Way Test – she discussed the formulation of her department’s mission.

Dr. Wilson’s first language was Spanish and she has lived in many remote places: Nicaragua , Dominican Republic , Haiti –all over Central and South America.  Miami is the “capitol” of Latin America.  FIU fits her background as an interesting and entrepreneurial site offer 40,000 students a multi-cultural education. It has a law school with an excellent reputation. The med school going online next year.  What is unique at FIU?  It has the largest Hispanic student body and the best education for the money in the country.  There is a dedicated attitude by the students who are dependent on scholarships.

The School of Music was previously thought of as a service enhancement dept. with archaic curriculum. Now, it’s a world class secret.

Since Miami doesn’t have a good public school system, arts education suffers.  FIU wants to connect with the community and help solve this problem.

TO HELP, HER WISH IS TO OFFER:

1)  FIU students a full tuition scholarship while having a minor in entrepreneurship.  They need to understand the business of music –a 19th century curriculum solely based on their instrument will not help them survive in the business world.

2) Each of the 300 undergraduate music majors, from 18 different countries, must volunteer 100 hours / year to the public schools + excel on their instrument.   1,000 student s currently participate through the school – marching band, core music classes, but 300 are true music majors.

On her first day at this job, ½ of the operating budget cut.  Her focus remains on scholarships for all music majors.

TUITION COSTS:
Instate scholarship is $3,500 / semester but the true cost of this education is $45,000
Out of state tuition costs $14,000 for the year.

The goal is to focus each student into four areas:

1.          Performance,
2.          critical thinking,
3.          philanthropy, and
4.     entrepreneurship

In the Fall of 1996 the School of Music moved into the $14.5 million Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center. This facility houses a 600-seat concert hall with a 74-rank Schantz pipe organ (considered by many to be the finest in the Southeast United States), a 150-seat recital hall as well as 30 practice rooms, instrumental rehearsal halls, state-of-the-art computer music studios, several percussion studios, and faculty teaching studios. Over 150 concerts are presented every year in the beautiful Wertheim Concert and Recital Halls.

The School of Music serves over 300 music majors from 18 countries with 24 full-time faculty and over 40 adjunct faculty members.  FIU offers a Bachelor of Music Degree with concentrations in string, vocal, wind, brass, percussion and keyboard performance, composition, jazz, and music technology, as well as a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science Degree in Music Education.  The School of Music also offers a Master of Music in composition, conducting, jazz, performance (in all of the areas listed above), performing arts management, and music technology.  FIU is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the School of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).  The new College of Architecture and the Arts was created just over a year ago and already we are exploring unique collaborative opportunities.

Students have an opportunity to be in our premier performing ensembles, which have toured South and Central America, the East Coast and the Midwest, have been featured on cruise ships and have recorded with many fine artists.  Students also have the opportunity to attend and perform in workshops and master classes by internationally-acclaimed artists such as George Crumb, Lukas Foss, Richard Stoltzman, and Arturo Sandoval (also an artist-in-residence at FIU).

The School of Music faculty is comprised of highly-trained artists and scholars who are nationally and internationally known and respected.  They are also superb and dedicated teachers who are committed to your success.  The university core and music curricula, recently revised, uphold high academic and artistic standards and—completed successfully—will prepare you well for a professional career in music.

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 @ 8:00 p.m.

World renowned jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, who is affiliated with the FIU Music School, will again perform in concert with the FIU Big Band.  The concert will be on campus and tickets can be ordered by calling 305/348-1998.

(I have attended such concerts, and they are wonderful. – Roy)
