DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘CAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

1.  Read a variety of current articles in the programs section and/or choose articles from the Archived Programs list and/or information from the Avenues of Service pages. You will be required to answer questions. There is space on the makeup request form for up to three articles to be reviewed, however you will need to read more than three to meet your 30 minute visit obligation.

2.  At the end of your 30 minute visit, click on Make-up Request Form from the drop-down menu at the top of the page OR the bottom of each make-up program.

3.  Read the Makeup Request Form carefully, and follow instructions. The form will appear once you press the SUBMIT button (one time only) and an email copy will be sent to the email address you proved. This can be forwarded to your club secretary so your attendance records are properly updated.

embers in eClub One are usually experienced Rotarians who are unable to belong to a traditional club because they reside in a remote location or they are engaged in a demanding travel schedule. Those applying for membership in eClub One must provide an endorsement from their current District Governor, current Rotary club President, along with letters of reference from two Rotarian colleagues of their current club..

eClub One has standard requirements for memberships, including charges for dues and administrative fees. Participants also must be willing to take part regularly in the Rotary eClub One community by taking on tasks and responsibilities. Members are required to also have regular access to the Internet and be willing to acquire the necessary skills to participate in the activities of Rotary eClub One.

Rotary and eClub One are on the cutting edge of the technology age. How this evolves will only be determined by periodic evaluation and the involvement of its members. For today, however, it is an outstanding tool for Rotarians to makeup missed meetings and keep in touch with Rotary happenings throughout the world.

Club Programming Donna Gaines introduced today’s speaker:

Roger Carleton

Acting City Mgr. City of South Miami

City of South Miami City Hall
6130 Sunset Drive
South Miami, FL 33143
General Information/Receptionist:
Tel: (305) 663-6338
Fax: (305) 663-6345

From the Miami Herald:

“Roger M. Carlton, who has tackled countless crises and projects during his nearly four-decade career as a municipal, county and business administrator, says he hopes to bring more cohesion to City Hall as South Miami's acting city manager.”

The decline in taxing revenues, are challenges facing the city of South Miami and all municipalities.

Our downtown is the envy of other areas.  Las Olas is just one street.  Coral Gables doesn’t have the lifestyle we have here.  S. Beach and Coconut Grove are different kinds of experiences.  In South Miami, we get restaurants that open here as either a branch or relocation from those other cities.

Restaurants are great but we need other business entities as a healthy combination of good retail.  Service places will tend to be west of US1 due to higher rent in the eastern section.

Hats off to those decision-makers who narrowed Sunset.  They were visionary and courageous  and started improvements with SW 73 Street.

The median price for a South Miami single family home in 2006 was $370,000 and now it’s $170,000 and that significantly affects the tax rolls.

The  annual city budget process begins in one month and analyzes all functions to see where every penny is spent and shave off money or promote growth to offset the losses.

Red Road Commons was controversial but it brings more people to live near town center for more taxes and income downtown.

The challenge for the commission and the manager is to find the  proper level of  development.  For example, what to do with the Winn Dixie site? Their lease is up in about four years. Another example is height restrictions on 62nd Avenue.  The battle is low density versus higher density on the city commission.

Overtown was historically a vibrant place with a social structure and I-95 ended that area as a viable place to live.  S. Miami is divided by US1 and this creates two sections. The CRA has had millions of dollars invested – new water and sewer.  However, the city needs to promote unity among the two sections.

Just because the bonds to fund a project are 30 year bonds it should not take 30 years to complete the project.  Tonight the Murray Park swimming pool is on the city council agenda.  If they vote to go forward, construction will begin in 9 months.  95% of the money will come from the federal government.

This project will show that the local government is dedicated to the community.

Madison Square project has stalled due to a density question which needs four – five votes, not majority rule according to the city charter.

More street lights, traffic calming, side walks – how to pay for these improvements? He wants to bring to the citizens of S. Miami a bond issue to do all of the traffic calming throughout the entire city at one time.  This keeps the problem from moving from one area to another since it’s been done piecemeal in the past.

He wants to get past the arguments with civil liberties and get traffic cameras at intersections.

The bottom line on parking meters is that the city is able to offset taxes with this revenue. In the near future,  the garage above the Carrabbas will change its method of taking meter fees – come in through a gate and get a ticket that you validate with a stamp and use the ticket to get out of the garage.
