on The State of the City

Todays speech gives me the opportunity to offer a synopsis of where the city is at financially and otherwise which is the basis of tonights State of the City Address.

All proceeds from the sale of tickets to tonights event go to the worthy causes of Alliance for Youth of SM and Afterschool House.

The citys reserve is over $2 million with its $20 million budget. Millage was lowered from 5.8 to 4.8 last year.  The city operates on a shoe-string budget where all employees wear two or three hats.

Reasons to be proud:

The new bicycle police.
Gray ghost team won championships in 3 weight categories played in the Orange Bowl
Reduced the ratio of the size of a home to the size of the property with appropriate setbacks.  Discussed landscape and buffering features along with setting the architecture to fit the character of the surrounding neighborhood.  Sets the guidelines to not overshadow your neighbors.
Finance Dept found state owed the city $15,000. Working diligently to bring back revenue to the city.  Permitting fees, occupational licensing, garbage fees, etc.
New citizens services like the issuance of passports generated $67,000 for 12,000 citizens.
Finding revenue sources to be competitive.

Future projects:

64th Street Commissioner Jemenez awared $200,000 to make improvements to this area.
Madison Square near Church Street the heart of the CRA will have office buildings with retail on the bottom and affordable housing on the top.
Vacant inspection station near the post office suggested to make it a surface parking lot to handle the post office overflow.
Red Road Commons 57th Ave demolition completed.
Bring an overpass to US1 to Shops of Sunset.  Funding source from county is already there.  Conceptual drawing
Across from City Hall the next Tuesday Commission Meeting will have a resolution for the construction contract to build a median on Sunset and brick the road to show that it is the heart of city government and the entrance to the shopping district.

Downtown businesses help to subsidize the renovation to the surface streets which will all be duplicating the revitalized feeling of  the avenue in which Carrabas and Outback are located.

62nd St., North of Sunset, has conceptual drawings but no funding yet.

The citys bond rating is excellent:  A rated.  We dont owe any money in bonds we are conservative except for a loan for the parking garage.  It offers 450 spaces city that didnt have before and Carrabas and Outback are paying back the loan.  It positively effects the business district.

A city offers the opportunity to partake in your government.  Local means you can get involved.
