President Linda Kaplan opened today’s meeting with a reminder of the District’s meeting with RI President Bill Boyd, 6:00PM, February 18, at the Signature Grand, in Davie. A sign-up sheet was passed around along with a reminder that once you’ve signed up, it is imperative to go to the District’s webpage and register. A second sign-up sheet was sent around for the Rotary Craft Fest. As this is the first year the Craft Fest is 100% Rotary owned, every member is committed to serve two 2-hour shifts. The Craft Fest Committee will be meeting tonight, 6:00 PM at the South Miami Library. All are invited to participate.
President Linda also reminded the membership of the February 13th meeting celebrating Valentines Day and spouses and/or significant others should be invited to attend. Also, The BBQ Celebration, Saturday, February 3, at Dan McCrea’s home,

TODAY'S SPEAKER
Program Chair Maxene Graham introduced Coral Gables Rotarian Yolanda Woodbridge, who gave a brief history of the Group Study Exchange (GSE) program and then introduced the visiting GSE team from District 2050 in Italy. Each team member was introduced and showed a PowerPoint slide show of their home, their family and expressed their appreciation to Rotary for the opportunity to travel to the U.S. and learn from their counterparts the “American” way of doing things. First up was the Rotarian GSE Team Leader Prof. Giovanni Marini, who boasted of being retired for three years as a neuron-surgeon. District 2050 is in Lombardy Province in northern Italy. Lombardy Province is home to 9,000,000 people, includes three Rotary Districts with 62 Clubs and 3,000 Rotarians. It is famous for its fashion and design – home of Armani – its wine and the Euroside to Rome Auto Race.
Next member of the GSE Team was Alicia Zamba, a 25-yr old Town Councilwoman with a Masters degree in screenwriting who also does copy editing and looking into joining the advertising industry. She also was a member of Rotaract.
Another team member is Laura Laffranchini, a psychologist with a medical doctor who enjoys dancing, sports and traveling as well as being a founding member and president of her Interact Club.
Next GSE team member to speak and only male, other than the team leader was Emanuele Santa Cruz, a police officer from Sardinia. He serves as a Warrant Officer and member of the Swat team. He likes the guitar and admits to liking beer, as well. He also spoke highly of the US Air Force as he was stationed on at US Air Base as part of the military coalition in Iraq.
Lia Bettoni is a Chartered Accountant – the Italian equivalent of a CPA – and business consultant. Her passion is art and she is also a member of a Rotaract Club.
Following the presentation by the GSE Team, fellow Rotarian Horace Feliu, wearing his Mayor of South Miami hat, presented the team with a Proclamation declaring January 30, 2007, as South Miami’s Italy Rotary GSE Team Day. Following the presentation of the proclamation, Club banners were swapped with the GSE team.

Ed Mattson, member of the Mishawaka, IN Rotary Club discussing "Rotary on an INTERNATIONAL LEVEL – Hands Across the Sea".
To set the stage and to gain appreciation for international projects, the itinerary is very broad-based and contains important information for every Rotarian:
1. Rotary is more than "local projects".
2. Why we have it so good in the US
3. Some of the latest cancer treatments available here in the US and taking them into the 3rd world.
4. Why Rotary is the best organization to change the world.
5. A look at the need for humanitarian aid in underdeveloped countries, and utilizing Rotary resources to make international projects easier.
6. Partnering with and sponsoring new Rotary Clubs in third world countries
7. A brief look at three current projects in Eastern Europe where Rotary's growth has been a phenominal 16%.
"This is the most informative program we have ever heard at a club meeting and we have certainly gained a greater respect for what Rotary is all about". Rob Ketron, PDG District 7620
"The information presented certainly opened my eyes and has allowed me to gain more insight into my battle with breast cancer" Liz Garcia, Member Santa Maria, CA Rotary |
