Brett Trembly, Attorney

Sutton Law Group

7721 SW 62 Avenue, South Miami, FL  33143

b.trembly@suttonlawgroup.com / 305-667-4481

Brett thanked Capt Assad, his sponsor.  He’s been attending RCSM meetings since November and everyone has been kind and made him feel welcome.

He grew up in a Rotary family.  His father and grandfather were both Presidents of Rotary Clubs.  His hometown is Belen, NM which is just south of Albuquerque.  It’s a club with 100 members.

His Grandfather had THIRTY YEARS of perfect attendance. Both father and grandfather were Paul Harris Fellows.  They are both proud that he’s a member of our club. Even Mom belong through a  Pilot’s club.

When he was growing up, only one male from each high school in the New Mexico was picked to participate for a weeklong Camp RYLA.  He was picked one year.  His childhood was filled with Rotary Christmas parties and he participated in Rotary functions.

**Graduate of UM Law School
**Passed the Bar in July
**Began practicing law in September
**Member of the RCSM in February

It’s been a productive year!!

On January 11, 2009, Florida Districts 6990 and 6930 held a Foundation Gala to celebrate all the good works our Rotary Foundation does around the world. We were honored to have Chairman Jonathan join us as the Keynote Speaker.

In these economic times, it is a challenge to ‘encourage’ people to part with their money, but 185 Rotarians enjoyed great fellowship, sumptuous food, and an inspirational presentation by Chairman Jon. Both Major Donors and Paul Harris Society Members were treated to a VIP reception with the Chairman and his wife, Ayo.

Since July 2008, 10 new Major Donors in both districts have stepped forward to make a significant commitment to The Rotary Foundation and were recognized at this function.

Although we were celebrating, we must remember “why” we support the Foundation. While we went home after a full meal — there were many who went to bed hungry and homeless. We must remember the many who must walk miles for a container of drinkable water and the children whose very lives are threatened by a virus called Polio. In these economic times, what we consider ‘hardship’, would be considered luxury by most of the world. Let us appreciate what we have and share it.

Polio Eradication ... It’s Not Over!

This month, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation pledged an additional $255 million to polio eradication. This was announced at the Rotary International Assembly. Rotary has been asked to match

$100 million of that grant.

A question has come up relative to the Gates, Rotary, UK and Germany $630 million polio

eradication donation announcement.

~How much money will polio eradication cost,

~Are we spending the money wisely and

~Are we seeing cost overruns.

I want to point out the following in case you are asked questions.

WHO has said that the last 1% eradication will be as difficult and expensive as the first 99%.

No one has said that our current effort to raise $200 million (Gates and us) will be all that it

takes.

I have been to India for a National Immunization Day (one day 700,000 booths and the next 6 days house-to-house visits by teams of 3 government/UNICEF workers covering 700 houses per team). The immunizations are given as an oral vaccine, not inoculations. They do 150 million children in one week. Each child needs multiple doses due to the unsanitary conditions in these endemic areas. The National Immunization Days occur 8-10 times/ year which means 1.25 billion vaccines per year. In addition, the money spent covers

much more than the vaccine –transportation for the vaccine (which must be kept cold),

communication, advertising, trinkets for the kids to help attract them to the booths, are all

among the costs.

I am not sure where you get the 400% overrun figure. I do know that this is a communicable disease that can be back in the US if we do not eradicate polio. Once the disease is eradicated, hundreds of millions of dollars and thousands of children’s lives will be spared.

Finally, Rotary is not the only organization raising money.    Governments are raising big money.

Inbound GSE Team from the Phillipines

The Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for business people and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas. RI District 6990 is looking for 5 GSE team members for this year’s trip to Quezon City in the Philippines, which is RI District 3780. Deadline for applications is December 8th, 2008. .TODAY’S PROGRAM....

Diana Phillips and Wendy Lapidus present…

Welcome to South Miami Rotary

ArtFest 101

www.southmiamiartfest.org

The festival pays for almost everything that isn’t running the club.  Monies that go to RI Foundation to fund their international efforts while 50% of that $ comes back to our Distict 6990 – is generated by this Art Show.

~Wendy collects artist materials and assigns booths.

~There are 138 artists scheduled to attend. They each ask her about 3-4 questions – keeping her hopping.

~This is a juried artshow.  Wendy viewed all of their applications to weed out the art from fake repackaged “art.”

We cannot have a show without you!  We have a reputation for being very good at monitoring the artists and the show.  However, we need bodies to assist!

FAQ:

How much money do we earn?

We expect to earn $22-23,000 from this show.

When are we needed?

~Spray painting the street booth spots on Sunset is Thursday, February 19th at 4:30 AM
~Set up on Saturday is 5:00 am

Show times for the public are:
Saturday 9:00 – 6pm &  Sunday 10:00 – 6pm

What happens during Set Up?

~City barricades off the street from Red to US1 on Sunset for the duration of the show.

~Artists  can drive in at 5pm to drop off.

~A volunteer is needed at each barricade to look for the yellow card on their windshield.

~All set up volunteers have maps for drop off and exit.

~ONE WAY traffic pattern from east to west – in the past there was only bringing in artist’s belongings via a dolly, but we’re allowing them to drive in their supplies

Are there written instructions?

~Parking map, instructions, volunteer yellow parking form were all mailed to the artists.  They will also be getting a packet with information when they check in at HQ on Saturday morning.
~Parking map details free parking for artists and volunteers at the Metro parking garage.
~ Set up rules and regulations are on the green sheet – sandbags not nails into the street.  Both mailed to them and in their registration packet.

Free Parking?

~With the yellow pass in the artist’s window windshield, they park for free at special section of MetroRail parking garage. 74th Street or the Miami Dade MetroRail Garage.

~ Last year no one was parking in the city garage at 58th Avenue.  Please direct patrons to that convenient building (above Carrabbas)

Free Food?

~Free coffee and donuts at headquarters

Where are important sites?
~Headquarters location is First National Bank of South Miami
~Public bathrooms are behind Washington Mutual

~First Aid station is next to Washington Mutual
What is expected of you as a Marshall?

1) walk around the show.

2)  You’ll be assigned a section which is a block.

3)  Say hello and introduce yourself to the artist

4)  Tell the artist to hail you down if they need to leave their booth and need you to booth sit

5)  Thank them for being in the show.

6)  Tell them that you’ll be walking for the next 3 hours.

7)  Wear your Rotary shirt and / or hat

8)  Sections with sponsors – introduced yourself and really thank them for the support that they give to Rotary.

What are the rules about artist’s storage?
~One rule we’re easy about due to our street is too narrow – the artist may wish to sit across from their booth with a plastic box of their items

~As long as it doesn’t look cluttered, or the police don’t demand them to move it – it is permitted.

Safety Rules:
~NO bicycling or roller skating – ask them to slow down and walk

~YES to pets – look for watering stations near Coke Booth and HQ.

How do we break down?

~Arrive at 4:30pm in the headquarters for police orientation

How do we make our $$?

~Food vendors are not selling water or soft drinks.

~Hampton and Fabio are in charge of the soda/water sales.

~We have two Coke booths #1 Sunset and 58th Avenue and Coke #2 by US1.

~We have to staff the festival plus these two money generators

How do we promote Rotary?

~Next to the coke booth will be a Rotary booth.

~Bring Back issues of Rotarian to give away at this booth.

What is the Children’s Alley?

~Exposure to local non profits that offer children-friendly interactive materials and activies.

Who will be the musical entertainment?
~Jeff Zabeck and his jazz ensemble will play on 58th and Sunset on Saturday and Sunday
~From 10am -noon the Miller Road Band with Carlos Gamaz

The festival is our biggest asset.  All members are responsible for protecting the quality, the excellent customer service and using common sense to help as we undertake this task.
