(wiki encyclopedia article)

Ltn Ross’ suggestion: meet face to face TLC with each of the downtown merchants.  The art show is not trying to inconvenience them nor their clients.

To do:  between now and Wednesday, Feb 20th canvas the downtown area.  Ann F. and Carolyn did the southside of Sunset and Dorn Ave.  Bob, Donna, and Wendy have volunteered to take invitations to the Sponsorship Party to the merchants. One more volunteer is needed to go store to store and talk to a manager with a handout and an invitation.  Smile, greet and explain who we are and why.

Our neighborhood festival wants to fit into the neighborhood as best as it can

100% membership participation is expected!

Sign up sheets were distributed and will be at each meeting, the RCSM has no shiftless members.

Talk to Diana if you plan to be out of town.

Today’s speaker was introduced by February Programming Committee Member Wendy Lapidus Several months ago we had a program that discussed elder law and that  the best way you can preserve your funds as you age is by long term care insurance.  Shortly after, we got a new member:

Neal Hirsch, fellow Rotarian,

“Preserving your Fortune” Long-term Care Insurance

8353 SW 124th St, Miami, FL 33156

(305) 271-0031

Neal is a transplant from Cleveland who’s lived in S. Florida since 1971.  He’s been married to Martha for 35 years and has two grown daughters living outside of S. FL.  He’s worked 17 years in the insurance industry covering group coverage, life disability and long term care.

The largest carrier and provider of long term insurance is the US Government through Medicaid.  Currently the federal government is making an effort to get the population to purchase long term insurance.  Long term insurance benefits are not taxable upon usage and it’s also tax deductible through your business.  The goal is to have individuals share the cost burden.

100 years ago, the life expectancy was 47, and now it’s 77.   When we live a long life, we may get sick.   Long term care is all about your family and protecting your assets.  It protects your estate providing you cash for expenses not out of pocket.

4 types of people
Those who have been caregivers
Those who are currently caregivers
Those who will need a caregiver
Those who are going to be caregivers

You use of long-term care may not be a life threatening illness.  It could be just a slip and fall or the time needed to recover from cancer – you need someone around temporarily.  The average amount of time long term care is needed is up to 5 years.

Current long-term care costs in a facility with a care-giver = $400 per day.   If you are in need of long-term care facility, and just rely on Medicaid, a bed vacancy is wherever the site is located; you may be shipped to the next available opening, which may be out of town.

For the cost o f the policy, you protect your assets.  Medicaid requirements look back at your finances for five years.  To qualify, you are allowed a maximum savings of $4000, one vehicle, one home and your spouse’s income to be $8,700 /year.  If you own more than this, you must deplete your assets until you show the financial need to meet their requirements.

To induce more private insurance participation promoting partnership – value of your insurance shelters the Medicaid requirement of maximum estate value.

The cost of 3-years of care impacts a family about $500,000.  When a large insurance company backs you – it’s easier to attain a better spot in a facility, or be able to stay at home with additional caregiver.

Having a policy offers you your security. The optimal age for buying this insurance: the younger you are the less the cost.  Premiums can be raised.  If you pick a large company like Genworth (was GE) or Metlife, when they raise premiums typically only the new policies going forward pay the increase.  Larger companies are financially stable.  Rates for those under 70 years of age are closer together in cost. Companies tend to not sell policies for those 83+ years of age.

Just available January 1, 2008 part of National Insurance Commission guidelines, if your policy meets components built in, it receives compound benefit interest at 5% each year.  The policy allows you to shelter the amount of the policy from qualifying for Medicaid.  Medicaid will allow you 100 days in a facility as long as you are making progress.  For federal taxes, if 7.5% of total income is your medical expenses – it can be a write-off.   Currently, long term insurance is not Erissa qualified – from a business expense it is a tax deductible business expense at this time.  It is not being treated as taxable income.

Long-term insurance is not like term insurance where costs are going down. As you age and remain healthy, with term insurance you can find a policy which will charge you less than 10 years ago.
