RICHARD B. BERNDT, former RCSM member, remembered…

For us “old timers” in the Club, I note the passing of Dick Berndt in the Obituaries section of today’s (2/19/08) Miami Herald. Dick was a State Farm Agent in South Miami and a long time member of our Club.

Don Streaker

And since the obit wasn't exactly clear, the viewing is Thursday night 2/21/08 & the funeral service is Friday morning 2/22/08 (the day of the service was omitted in the obit).  Dick was a real character & will be missed.

Michael S. Mills

My first thought when I read the notice was "Happy Holidays!" which is the way Dick always greeted everybody.  He maintained his ad in our newsletter for years after he left the Club.

BERNDT, RICHARD BETHIG, "MR. B". On Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 11:03 PM, Richard Bethig Berndt was taken to his heavenly home. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. Richard was committed to the safety and well being of the people of the city of Miami by supplying all of their insurance needs for fifty-two years as a State Farm Insurance Agent in South Miami. He proudly served his country as an Armed Guardsman in World War II with the United States Navy on the USS John W. Troy. A civic-minded citizen, Richard served on many boards and committees. He ran for State Legislature, was Past President of the South Miami Hospital Associates, was Past President of the South Miami Jr. Chamber of Commerce, he held an office in the Kendall-Perrine Kiwanis Club, was a member of the South Miami Rotary Club and was a long-standing member of the Hurricane Club. Richard swam for the U.S. Navy, Florida State University and was in the Senior State of Florida Championships, where he won many medals. Richard was a supporter and avid sports fan to all sports, whether it was the Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat, Florida Marlins, the University of Miami or Florida State University. He enjoyed the thrill of competition and the satisfaction of winning. He will be remembered in the hearts of all his family: his loving wife of 51 years, Margaret Anne; daughter Laura (Jamie) Rubin, son Rick (Janet) Berndt, daughter Lisa (Mont) Cartwright, son Charles (Anna) Berndt, son Lance (Kimberly) Berndt; 14 grandchildren Natasha, Justin, Jeremy, Caitlin, Megan, Daniel, Arielle, Anson, Tara Lyn, Jacqueline, Christina, Autumne, Amberlyn and Dakota. He is also survived by his brother Charles (Patty) Berndt of Hollywood, many cousins from Chicago, and many other family members and friends. The family of Mr. B gives thanks and appreciation to his caregivers Sharon Lockhart, Ursula Edwards, Susan Munson, and Joy Thomas. "Jesus said, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'" John 8:12 The viewing will be held Thursday, February 21 from 6-8 PM at Stanfill Funeral Home. A Christian Funeral Service will be at 10:30 AM at Concordia Lutheran Church, 8701 SW 124 Street. Interment will be at Woodlawn Park South Cemetery with a reception following immediately at Concordia Lutheran Church Reception Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Richard Berndt Memorial Fund and will be used to further the Kingdom of God at Concordia Lutheran Church in Miami and the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Nebraska. What the Coast Guard Auxiliary Does

Dick has been a member in the Coast Guard Auxiliary for 12-13 years.  Leo Haskins is also member.  Roy and Dr. Mike have benefited from taking the boating safety training courses.

The auxiliary was formed in 1915 when two services were combined.  The first was Alexander Hamilton’s Revenue Cutters (sailboats with as much sail in front of the mast as behind) which offset smuggling.  The second was the life saving service (in 1850) that rescued ships caught in the lee-shore, could not square its jib, and caught on  reefs.  Legendary seaman would go to save the stranded.

The Coast Guard has always had a dual personality: 1) Smuggling liquor, drug, people & 2)  Lifesaving.

1939, the beginning of WW2, the USA did not have enough ships.  So the Congress set up an auxiliary of volunteer citizen boats.  At first the volunteers were armed with weapons.   After the Battle of Dunkirk, when the British Army was trapped on the beaches by the Nazis, the British lifesaving services were sent across the channel in small boats to rescue.  Impressed with their success, the US Congress then broadened the powers of the Auxiliary Coast Guard.

After WW2, the auxiliary was retained to be the lifesaving arm of the Coast Guard.  Their insignia is silver not gold but same uniform and same training and held to the same standards.  Federal Statute states in order to captain a vessel the person must be knowledgeable to become a coxswain,  A coxswain must pass 120 tasks in front of a qualified examiner.   Every three years you must have to be recertified.

The coxswain (pronounced cox'-en) is the person in charge of a boat, particularly its navigation and steering. The etymology of the word gives us a literal meaning of "boat servant" since it comes from cox, a coxboat or other small vessel kept aboard a ship, and swain, which can be rendered as boy, in authority.

What the Auxiliary does:

1)     Search and rescue and boating safety and skills courses.  If you are 21 or under you need to take a course to be certified to captain a boat.

2)     Monitor boat ramps on weekends inspecting boats.

3)     The Auxiliary is a dedicated group of people who actions largely go unheralded.   During the last Labor Day Regatta, a woman was saved who was face down in the water.  Rescuing someone from sea is one of the most rewarding experience.

4)     Always look for volunteers, an interesting opportunity for a completely different  activity and a chance to have a second life from your job.  There are no minimum number of hours to volunteer.

5)     Offers free gasoline for boaters volunteering for shifts.  Offers free gasoline and airplane maintenance for volunteering pilots.

What the Auxiliary doesn’t do:

1)     The Auxiliary has no law enforcement powers  for flotillas or people found at sea.

2)     Towing – commercial salvage first.  Otherwise, auxillery can intercede.

The airstation at Opa Locka is picture perfect and immaculately kept.   Auxiliary staff are not held to the same rigorous standards as a new entry soldier.  The Navy and coast guard pilots both receive the same training at Pensacola

The 60 miles around Miami is covered by Miami Beach Coast Guard station with at least two boats readied for assistance.  Operation Hawkeye is a radar screen to identify every ship coming into Port of Miami
