And a heavy sigh as we wished well to the "mother of our artshow" Past President Lydia White. She leaves it in the good hands as she watches it taken over by her kids...

"We're a strong group of friends first that is a part of a club and an international organization. Keep it up and don't let it fade.

...we envy Kentucky its new resident.

DID YOU MISS A MEETING 'CAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Visit www.rotary6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

What a great opportunity this can be to visit another club and meet new and interesting members who are business owners and community leaders. They might be interested in the services that you provide.

For online make-ups:

center/pdfs/eclub_list.pdf

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity. This offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club. To earn an attendance credit, Rotarians usually log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, and submit a form to the club secretary.

For make-ups anywhere around the world when traveling internationally:

J is for Jobs

What is Job Corps?

Job Corps is the nation's largest residential and educational training program for economically challenged youth, ages 16 through 24. Established in 1964, Job Corps has trained and educated more than two million young people to date and continues to serve more than 70,000 young Americans each year.

Who are Job Corps students?

Young people who enroll in Job Corps do so to learn the skills they need to become responsible and employable. Job Corps is a voluntary program. To be accepted, applicants follow a zero tolerance policy for drugs and violence.

To be eligible for the Job Corps program applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Be age 16 through 24
  • *Age requirement waived for applicants over 24 with disabilities*
  • Be from a home that is considered low income
  • Be from a location with conditions that keep you from getting an education or a job
  • Be able to benefit and complete the training provided at the Job Corps Center

How does Job Corps work?

Apply to join the program through a Job Corps Admissions Counselor. Eligible youth are assigned to a specific Job Corps center (there are 122,) usually one that is located near home and offers vocational training of interest to the youth. Lorene's center is l
ocated at the former site of Homestead Air Force Base. There is one in Miami, Jacksonville, and Gainesville. Job Corps provides housing, meals, and medical services. While on the center, students take part in academic, vocational, and life skills training, all of which promote employability skills and work-based learning. After students leave the program, Job Corps provides placement assistance for jobs, further education, and the military, as well as follow-up support.

How long do students stay in Job Corps?

Because Job Corps is a self-paced program, lengths of stay vary. Students may remain enrolled for up to two years, but the average length of stay is approximately seven months. An optional third year is granted for students who qualify for advanced training.

Homestead Job Corps Center offers the opportunity for area residents who meet Job Corps' admissions standards to be non-residential students who receive the same benefits offered to residential students, but do not live on campus.

Education and Training

Homestead Job Corps Center offers:

    • High school diploma program
    • GED program
    • Work-based learning opportunities
    • Personalized career development plan
    • Hands-on training in your chosen trade
