HAITI:

http://www.theodora.com/maps/haiti2.gif

The greatest need in Haiti right now remains money. The District 6990 Finance & Procedure Committee met on Saturday, January 30, 2010. A decision was made to donate $15,000 from the District Robbins Fund and $35,000 from the District Reserve Fund to the The Haiti Earthquake Relief Donor Fund #296.

This is the Donor Advised Fund that Rotary International has established to streamline the flow of contributions. The fund is directed by Rotarian account holders who will work with local Rotary clubs and districts, as well as emergency relief agencies, to meet the most pressing needs of people in the affected areas of Haiti. While some Rotary clubs in District 6990 have already contributed, additonal donations are welcome.

Complete information is available at www.rotary.org/haiti or on the Rotary International home page, www.rotary.org

WHAT IS THE ROTARY FOUNDATION

“SHARE SYSTEM”?

http://www.rotaryredcliffesunrise.org/images/rotary_share.jpg

The SHARE system is the mechanism through which The Rotary Foundation Program awards are distributed worldwide.  In the SHARE system, Annual Programs Fund contributions to The Rotary Foundation are transformed into Ambassadorial Scholarships, Matching Grants, Group Study Exchanges, and more.

At the end of every contribution year, (ending 30 June) each Rotary district’s contributions to the Annual Programs Fund are divided into two funds:

  • 50% to World Fund
  • 50% to the District Designated Fund (“DDF”)

The 50 percent to the World Fund pays for worldwide programs available to all Rotary districts and clubs, regardless of their specific contributions.  The district uses the remaining 50 percent or “DDF” to fund the Foundation programs it chooses to participate in, such as Ambassadorial Scholarships, credit toward the sponsor portion of a Matching Grant, an additional Group Study Exchange or simplified grants.

THE THREE YEAR CYCLE

An additional facet of the SHARE system is its unique funding cycle wherein Annual Programs Fund contributions are invested for three years and used for programs three years after they are received.  The three year cycle gives districts time for program planning and participant selection and allows the Foundation to pay for administration and fund development costs from the earnings from those investments. The access earnings can also be used to support programs funding, thereby NO donation has been used for administration cost, but is spent in THE ROTARY FOUNDATION PROGRAMS!  To continue this process your donations are important for the future. It is time to give now and leave our legacy for Rotary year 2012-2013.

YOUR DISTRICT 6990 FOUNDATION COMMITTEE STANDS READY TO ASSIST YOU IN ACCESSING THESE FUNDS! OUR ROTARY FOUNDATION COMMITTEE CHAIR IS PDG JACK MARTIN, H/PHONE; 305-865-0747; E-MAIL: jackmartin@mail.com  HE WOULD BE HAPPY TO CONECT YOU WITH THE PROPER PERSON TO ASSIST YOU.

A Concert to End Polio

This Concert is being presented through the generosity of a local Charitable Foundation, whose mission it is to promote the arts. It is their wish to remain anonymous. They requested that we focus the Concert exclusively on Rotary and its efforts to eradicate Polio. Thus it is named "A Concert to End Polio" in the name of the PolioPlus initiative to "End Polio Now."

This promises to be a memorable evening of music with the gentle sax of Dave Koz and the piano stylings of Shelly Berg, backed by the amazing UM Concert Jazz Band.

100% of the proceeds for this event goes to the PolioPlus Program of Rotary International.

100% of the $45 ticket is a tax deductible donation.

Tickets may be purchased directly from the Rotary Foundation of Coral Gables by clicking on the secure PayPal button under the flyer. You can use your credit card, or your PayPal account if you have one.  Click on the flyer to view a larger version.

Rotary Club of Miami Brickell

now “Provisional

The Rotary Club of Miami MetroZoo will not be District 6990’s newest club much longer. The new Rotary Club of Miami Brickell received provisional status from District Governor Lee Phares in February.

The new club meets at Perricone’s Marketplace & Café each Tuesday morning at 7:45 a.m. for fellowship with its program beginning promptly at 8 a.m. Perricone’s, located at 15 SE 10th Street, sits in a quiet park nestled in the shadows of skyscrapers lining Brickell Avenue. As the restaurant is not open to the public for breakfast, our new club has the place to themselves.

District Membership and Extension Chair Chris Morrison wishes to thank Ellen Blasi, Governor’s Special Representative and a member of the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne, and Charter President Designee Antonio Pinheiro, formerly a Director of the Rotary Club of Miami, for their tireless efforts in forming this new club. He also wants to thank the Rotary Club of Coconut Grove and the Rotary Club of Key Biscayne for sponsoring a new Rotary Club within our District.

As a provisional club, Rotarians who attend the Rotary Club of Brickell will now receive a Make-up Credit. Visiting Rotarians who wish to attend a meeting at the new club may R.S.V.P. by contacting Ellen Blasi at (305) 479-8118 or by e-mail at epblasi@yahoo.com .

WORDS FROM A GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE TEAM MEMBER:

“In Warsaw, Poland, Woijeich Sierpinski, a Rotary Club President, took me on a tour that I will never forget.  We visited his parent’s house – where they lived during WW II.  There in the kitchen, under a dusty stack of crates was a secret wood panel in the floor.  Woijeich removed the panel to reveal a tiny room underneath the kitchen floor where his parents hid their neighbors – a Jewish family – during the war.  As I stood speechless, listening to Woijeich describe how they evaded the Nazis, I realized the full value of the Group Study Exchange program.”  Ian Oxman, Group Study Exchange member from California.

“Haitians and their Immigration Status”

http://www.southmiamirotary.org/newsletter/images/lindakaplan.jpg

http://f527.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f8518940%5fAOUwvs4AAAP9S41YFA2MOBqqoIo&pid=2&fid=Inbox&inline=1

Vocational service:  I’m an Immigration Attorney who started as a tax attorney which taught me skill to help  review client’s business plans, income statements, etc.

Temporary Protective Status (TPS) is being granted to those Haitians who were physically present in the USA on January 12, 2010.  This status is geared to help nationals from countries with serious problems.

The US Government doesn’t want for people to risk their lives to get here so that is why 1/12/10 is the cut off date.

Approximately 98% of those who would file for TPS would be here illegally. This gives them status that they didn’t have before:  opportunity to get a driver’s license, auto insurance, and the ability to work

Airlifted medical patients get humanitarian parole.  Haitian orphans are no longer being brought over – the process became too overwhelming.

TPS is not permanent residence.  The person cannot petition citizenship for a relative.  This allows them to be in a middle ground status between legal and illegal.

We need to have comprehensive immigration reform – since we don’t have the resources to “remove” / deport all those here illegally.

Blanket statements such as “Our unemployment rate is too high so lets deport those who are illegal” don’t make sense. The economic analysis of legalizing those here illegally would help the economy.

Remittances of the Haitians’ earning to their country in 2/21/10 Miami Herald article.  The benefit is that the money sent to that country does come back and get spent in the USA.

Taxpayers pay for emergency medical care.  We would want illegal’s who will get sick to purchase health insurance, have those using our road to drive to have driver’s licenses, those who will potentially get into vehicle accidents to have purchased auto insurance. They can only do this in TPS status.

Wet Foot / Dry Foot has been in effect since the 1960’s and is controversial since it applies only to one nationality.

------------------------------------------------------------

From the Miami Herald:

“Remittances Good for U.S. Businesses”

Below are excerpts from the report ``Many Happy Returns -- Remittances and their Impact: How Money Sent Home by Migrant Workers Helps the American Economy'' by Kristin Johnson.

The remittances Haitians receive will be extremely important to their recovery process. Furthermore, the money that leaves the United States in the form of remittances will be used by Haitians to purchase U.S. exports. Over half of Haiti's imports originate in the United States, and the states with the most Haitian immigrants also have large export markets in Haiti. In this way, the remittances that immigrants here send abroad have a positive impact on the U.S. economy and trade.

There are approximately 535,000 Haitians living in the U.S.

Florida has the largest Haitian population -- 46.4 percent of Haitians in the United States live in Florida; 24.1 percent live in New York; 7.6 percent live in New Jersey, and 7.1 percent live in Massachusetts.

Haitians' remittances to family members in Haiti constitute a significant part of the Haitian economy.

Haitians in the United States have maintained ties to their families in Haiti, and the Haitian economy has become increasingly reliant on money sent by Haitians living abroad. Approximately one in five households in Haiti receives remittances.

According to Haiti's Central Bank, Haitians send approximately $1 billion per year to Haiti, more than a quarter of the country's GDP. Remittances are an increasingly important source of income to Haitians; total remittances are larger than the total annual foreign direct investment and annual revenue from exports.

The majority of Haitians who receive remittances are very poor. The World Bank found that 55 percent of remittance-receiving households do not have any other income.

Remittances sent to Haiti are largely spent on the provision of basic needs: housing, food, clothing and medicine.

The United States has a positive trade balance with Haiti, indicating that Haiti purchases more imports from the United States than it exports here. Between 1990 and 2009, between 50-60 percent of imports into Haiti originated in the United States. Rice, wheat and meat products comprise the largest dollar amounts in terms of exported goods.

Florida has both the largest Haitian-born population in the United States and the largest share of Haiti's export market. In 2008, nearly 24 percent of Haiti's exports from the United States came from Florida. Haiti was Florida's 37th largest export market in 2008, ranging in value from 34th to 37th between 2000 and 2008, with the 2004 dollar value of these exports reaching $223,241,000.

New York ranks sixth in total U.S. state exports to Haiti, realizing $34,677,000 in exports there in 2008.

New Jersey is the 10th-largest state exporter to Haiti, with $22,157,000 in export revenues.
