The King Pins Challenge

Mayor Feliu is requesting your participation in "the King Pins Challenge", an inaugural event to benefit Informed Families and the South miami Drug-Free Coalition.

The event is co-chaired by State Rep. & former Mayor Julio Robaina, Mayor Feliu & former Mayor & President of Chamber South, Mary Scott Russell.

The organizations are the premier local ones involved in providing drug and alcohol free lives to the children of our area.

To learn more, log on to www.informedfamilies.org

All 13 lanes at Splitsville will be used for this event.  Each lane is captained by a civic or business leader or representative from our community, who will field a team of six players total. The lane sponsorship is $750 (for the 6 players).

The six bowlers solicit pledges for the number of pins they'll score - similar to pledging per mile for walkathons. The pledges can be any amount per pin - or a flat amount. Teams will bowl two games and the total score of the two games will be used to calculate the pledge money.

Trophies will be awarded for the Top Team Score and Top Team Pin Pledges.

Each team member will be provided two complimentary tickets to the event to cheer on the team. This entitles the guests to the buffet & non-alcoholic beverages. Otherwise, guest tickets are $20 for additional spectators.

Purchase a ticket to cheer or heckle!!

.TODAY’S PROGRAM....

Jon Schmidt

Florida Council on Gambling with Miami Coalition

888-ADMIT-IT

Compulsive Addiction to Gambling

Mr. Schmidt is the father of five 18 mo to 25 who was born in Baltimore.  He’s lived in Miami for 25 years.

The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling is a membership based non-profit educational and advocacy organization under contract with Florida state government.

The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling (FCCG) is committed to increasing public awareness about problem and compulsive gambling.  The FCCG provides services and supports to residents in need of assistance, as well as to professionals and others servicing this population.  The organization is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and is one of more than 35 affiliates of the National Council on Problem Gambling.

Gambling has been in FL for the last few years.

Everyone in the audience has been touched by alcoholism, drug addiction, but more insidious is what  we find today:  the gambler with compulsive tendencies.

This organization tried to stop them from losing their dignity, losing their house, committing suicide from putting the finances, their family into dire straits.

Other addicts have:

·        Arrests

·        Car Accidents

·        Smell like tobacco or marijuana

·        Slurring of words, stumbling, bruises

FL has gambling through:

·        Jai Alai

·        Casinos

·        Lotto

·        Power Ball

·        Horses

·        Dogs

·        Internet

Chasing the initial loss leads us into the addiction and darker areas like suicide 25% of those hitting the bottom go into suicidal ideations.

Gambling addiction happens to senior citizens who are bored.  With a credit card, they can be picked up by a van to bring them to the casino.  False friends fill in the gaps in their lives – to steal their money through the routine of gambling and then the addiction

More than ego compel them and they cannot stop themselves.

·        Lies

·        Shame

·        Guilt

Nowhere to go except to keep chasing the win.

Stop going to work – there is an insidious problem

Then they commit crimes

Sliding scale cost for the person who calls

Blackjack brought out compulsive gamblers by 25%. This fast moving game is thrilling so their mind is acting rapidly while money moves back and forth.

A gambler gets the rush just by hearing the words “You Won.”

The same rush for a drug addict that needs the substance.

So many people in our state are becoming ill.

Little kids start with betting.  Problems bud as young as 12.

Money goes away and people don’t see what’s going on as they wait for the win just  around the corner.

No group work.  Until they are getting better – loving kindness doesn’t work

Gambling Anonymous is a very effective12 step oriented group that creates a bond...  This is not that program.

Whether you’re seeking information or help for a gambling problem, you’ve come to the right place.

The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization that provides information, resource referrals, and support services for problem gamblers, their families, employers and others.  We also offer prevention and education programs, as well as professional training for mental health, addiction and medical practitioners, gambling operators, governments, businesses, academia, law enforcement authorities, faith based organizations, and others.
