is a training program for young leaders, emphasizing leadership, citizenship, and personal growth. The club's foundation has $550 budgeted to send two students.  Each year, thousands of young people take part in RYLA worldwide. Young people ages 14-30 chosen for their leadership potential attend an all-expenses-paid seminar, camp, or workshop to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the event's curriculum.

Today’s Speaker

Program chair Pansy Graham introduced
Mark Hart,
Executive Drector
Coral Gables Congregational Church's Community Arts Program
3010 Desoto Boulevard
Coral Gables, FL 33134
(305) 448-7421

Mark, a former disk Jockey for WTMI radio, began his remarks sharing what he learned about Rotary and Rotary's founder Paul Harris. He then compared the evolution of the church's community arts program with the evolution of Rotary. The arts program was founded in 1975 to raise funds for needy children through programs presenting performing arts in South Florida and a summer concert series. After it's successful launch, it formed a partnership with the Conservatory for the Arts, which provides free musical instruments and lessons to needy children. Through the program, the students have formed a 40 piece active-learning ensemble which meets twice a week to practice. The newest element of the program is the formation of a steel drum orchestra.

The Summer Concert Series features reknowned artists such as the Tommy Dorsey orchestra, classical violinist Arabella Steinbacher, jazz vocalists Karrin Allyson, former Count Basie singer Marlena Shaw and Bass Baritone Jubilant Sykes. Additionally, Classical Guitarist Christopher Parkeing and jazz saxiphonist Ravi Coltrane -- son of John Coltran -- will appear, as well.

Mark closed his remarks by donating four pairs of tickets to the Club Raffle.

Charles Schultz's Philosophy
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.
