- Our exchange student, Sebastian, spoke to us about his experiences so far as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student. He is here from Cologne, Germany and so far has been to many places, including Sea Camp, Disney World and the weekend at Stiltsville. Sebastian has learned about the ocean and about other countries, meeting other Rotary Exchange Students. His host family took him skiing in Utah, and he said that the skiing was even better than in Austria. Sebastian just returned from Hawaii (he participated in an optional trip as part of the program that he paid for), and it was "the best ever". What Sebastian has learned is that Americans are more open than Germans. He now knows different types of people, had never met anyone who was Hispanic or African American before, and the everyone is the same.
- Doreen reminded us about that this is Rotary Literacy Month, and is an excellent time to consider volunteering for the Literacy project throught the library to teach someone to read.
- Good news today about Diana Phillips - she is out of the ICU but not up to visitors yet. We can send cards, etc. to her at South Miami Hospital
- Horace Feliu presented "Craft Talk". He is in the biomedical field, and his company is sterilequip, deals with sterilization. He does consulting and sells sterilizers, primarily to hospitals.

Our Speaker Today: Alba Weinman
Alba is well known to Rotary, as her family hosted 5 exchange students in the past and she was the webmaster for Rotary Youth Exchange. In 2007, she became a Personal Empowerment Coach and founded Hopes and Achievements, Inc. Each weekday morning she sends out inspiring quotes and affirmations to hundreds of subscribers around the world.
Personal empowerment is very important to Alba, and she shared her story with us. Alba learned when she was two that her mother had a dream to be free, and they left Cuba with $8.00 in quarters and came to the US. Alba's mother was her inspiration.
As a teen, Alba left her parents, moved to Florida, and worked her way up from a low-end clerical job to become the Vice President of Telecommunications for Southeast Bank. In her roles, she was always coaching people. After the bank went under, Alba had to start all over and a recurrent theme was that she liked coaching people - and her dream was to be a coach.
Alba went through some very difficult times, but now has a story to inspire people. She sees things in a different perspective, has the view that life is about growing, and offers a 12 week program so that participants can see where they are out of balance in their lives. Alba schedules coaching appointments in the evenings, and works with the client over the phone for one hour. Alba follows a weekly lesson plan and makes every session unique for the client and coach. Visit her website, www.albaweinman.homestead.com for more information.
