A Concert to End Polio

This Concert is being presented through the generosity of a local Charitable Foundation, whose mission it is to promote the arts. It is their wish to remain anonymous. They requested that we focus the Concert exclusively on Rotary and its efforts to eradicate Polio. Thus it is named "A Concert to End Polio" in the name of the PolioPlus initiative to "End Polio Now."

This promises to be a memorable evening of music with the gentle sax of Dave Koz and the piano stylings of Shelly Berg, backed by the amazing UM Concert Jazz Band.

100% of the proceeds for this event goes to the PolioPlus Program of Rotary International.

100% of the $45 ticket is a tax deductible donation.

Tickets may be purchased directly from the Rotary Foundation of Coral Gables.

Join Mike Mills at the concert – he just bought tickets online!  You can use your credit card, or your PayPal account if you have one.

Because of Rotarian support, more than six million children who might have been polio victims are walking and playing normally.  Since 1985, through Rotary’s efforts and those of its partners around the world, more than two billion children have received polio vaccines and have been protected.  To date, 209 countries, territories and areas around the world are polio free. Only four (4) Countries remain with POLIO, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria. Remember……..“PAIN”!

THANK YOU FOR HAVING SUPPORTED THE ROTARY FOUNDATION AND ITS EFFORTS IN ERADICATING POLIO FROM THE PLANET. OUR DISTRICT 6990 GOLF BALL DROP HAS BROUGHT US EVER CLOSER TO OUR GOAL OF RAISING $300,000.00. WE SHOULD REACH $250.000.00 BY THE END OF THIS ROTARY YEAR!  KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

WORDS FROM A GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE TEAM MEMBER:

“In Warsaw, Poland, Woijeich Sierpinski, a Rotary Club President, took me on a tour that I will never forget.  We visited his parent’s house – where they lived during WW II.  There in the kitchen, under a dusty stack of crates was a secret wood panel in the floor.  Woijeich removed the panel to reveal a tiny room underneath the kitchen floor where his parents hid their neighbors – a Jewish family – during the war.  As I stood speechless, listening to Woijeich describe how they evaded the Nazis, I realized the full value of the Group Study Exchange program.”  Ian Oxman, Group Study Exchange member from California.

Historical information/anecdotes about

S. Dade, Kendall, South Miami

This schoolteacher turned businessman, was Miami born and has lived in the same neighborhood all his life.  He has thrown his hat into the race and is running for County Commission District 8 – the seat that Katy Sorenson is vacating.

He’s penned a history of Kendall with his sister…

A Glimpse Back in Time: Kendall History

The proceeds from this book will benefit Kenwood School located on 79th Ave just south of Kendall Drive.  It was established in 1928.

There was an orphanage named Kendall Home so Kendall School changed its name to not be confused.  The winner of the contest to rename was Tequesta but since there were too many letters and only 7 mounts on the wall they choose Kenwood.

~ The Kendall School students were shoeless because they crossed the slough so they left their shoes before wading through to get to school.

~ Kendall had a train station.  Homestead was considered the “big” city.  High school students went to Homestead to attend weekday school and returned for the weekends.

FACTOIDS:

~The higher land was pineland with a finger sloughs in cultivation with tomatoes - Snapper Creek slough had some cypress trees

~1948 Kendall was 4 blocks total.  Seminole indians lived in an encampment in Kendall just south of where there is currently a Winn Dixie at 104th

~ In April,  an area called Kenwood is a forested spot that offers the last best spot to see a huge diversity of birds for avid birdwatchers.

~John Bouton Kendall was an investor from England involved in the early homesteading.

~The Mitchells were the first family to live (near in Cutler) and Mitchell Drive is named after them.  Deering built the Deering Estate next to this family’s land with a boat basin launching area.  Deering fenced the area and brought in crocodiles to keep the neighbors off of his property.  The  Mitchell’s jumped the fence,  killed and ate the crocs.  He built a public launch space called the “people’s dock” offering the water access.

~Brown’s airport would be in East Kendall next to the Mitchells.

~1961 the Palmetto joined US1.  The route was changed from 79th Avenue with a plan that Kendall would sweep west but this was abandoned.  Pepperwood Complex resulted after that Snapper Creek Extension was cleared and then a Brazilian Pepper forest grew.

~Elbows in US 1 are high point elevations.  Rock pits like Wayside Parks are where they dug out coral rock to produce infill for the road.

~There were settlements like Cutler where the water level was lower.

~The Dice House was well built and lost just shingles in Hurricane Andrew.

~Jack Henman who attended Kendall School now sells bird houses in Kendall.  Arvida bought his land three times.

~George Merrick had plans that after Coral Gables was completed he was to start Flagler Groves in the east side of Kendall – Pinecrest.  A historic marker has recently been erected.  The 1935 hurricane destroyed these hopes.

~ South of Dadeland Mall there was a German POW camp.  Before that, the CCC

~Janet Reno lived where the old Dade County Youth Fair was located prior to moving to its current location.

Getting a sense of roots and a sense of place is so important.  We’re like Gumbo Limbos that root whichever way they are planted.  We want to root and stay in place.
