President-Elect Pansy Graham called the meeting to order filling in for President Bill Enright who had to attend business meeting at work.

Pansy informed the Membership that pictures would be taken during the meeting for publication in a South Miami magazine.

Please note the sad news below with respect to the death of Otto Fuentes’ mother.

Memorial Plan Funeral Home - Coral Gables, 1717 SW 37th Avenue, Miami, FL on Sunday, March 15th, 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Catholic Mass at the Church of the Little Flower, Coral Gables on
Monday, March 16th, at 11:00 AM

Internment at the Memorial Plan cemetery, Palmetto and Sunset Rd., following the mass.

Pansy asked the membership to put Otto Fuentes and his family in our prayers on the loss of his mother.

We hope you feel better….

Ann Fisher broke her foot last Saturday and can't walk or drive for 6 - 8 weeks. She has a friend staying with her who is taking care of most everything else.

She asks if anyone has a used "walker" that is no more than 24" wide (outside dimensions).   I have a "wide" walker they gave me at the hospital but it doesn't go through many my doors (or into my shower!).  A new one is over $100 and it occurred to me one of our members might have one I could borrow temporarily.

Pansy encouraged the membership to visit and help lift her spirits.

Sunday, March 22, 5:00 - 8:00pm
The King Pins Challenge

South Miami Mayor Horace Feliu extended and invitation to the membership to participate in the King Pins Challenge on Sunday, March 22. at the Splitsville Bowling Lanes.

Like a corporate run where you contribute per mile, here you would contribute per pin. The City of South Miami will be fielding 13 teams from various City departments.

Assistant Chief of Police and Past President Mike Mills offered free tickets to be a spectator and invited the membership see the South Miami Police team kick the butt of the Metro-Dade Firefighters from the South Miami Station. Funds for the event support Informed Families and the South Miami Drug-Free Coalition.

President-Elect Pansy read a letter from Informed Families thanking us for the $750 contribution made by the Rotary Club of South Miami.

.TODAY’S PROGRAM....

John Kane, Past President

The Emerald Society

John is Chairman Celtic Cultural Committee, an organization of men and women of Irish Ancestry, who will speak about one of the many facets of being Irish.Top of Form

A native of Boston Massachusetts, John earned both a BS and an MBA at Clark University in Worcester, Mass and had a successful career in banking, advertising, is currently an instructor at the University of Miami.

He also holds a third degree black belt in Shotokan Karate, which is why no one teased him about the Kilt he wore.

John began his presentation singing several humorous Irish ditties, then told personal stories of his family’s arrival in America sprinkled with Irish Humor and delivered with a delightful Irish brogue. He talked about his recent trip back to Ireland and his visit to numerous Irish pubs where he learned about the protocol of pouring ale in several of the taverns. In one pub in his family’s hometown, he was greeted with,  “Another damn Yank searching for his roots!”

He also found it fascinating that they still spoke Gaelic

-- not English. There he also listened to Kerry men jokes; which he likened to Polish jokes in this country. He also talked about learning to drive on the “wrong” side of the road.

John also set up his laptop computer for the members to view pictures of Ireland’s countryside after his presentation.
