THIS MONTH IS ...

LITERACY MONTH

According to UNESCO, approximately one quarter of the world's adult population, over one billion, are illiterate.

Of those, two-thirds are women, with 98% of all illiterates living in developing countries.

The correlation between illiteracy and poverty is conclusive. Literacy improves the health and welfare of a community.

What do you want to see happen locally or globally, to promote literacy? Make it happen!

Water, Water Everywhere

Florida's tourism industry is $23.1 billion in 2005.  Tourism is based on our beaches, fishing, diving and weather NOT shopping malls and pavement.

Recently the state of Florida stopped Dade county's approval of the largest onslaught of applications for development of farmlands.  The county has to prove to the state ways that it can bring water resources to match the needs this building spree brings.

Choices for creating additional water:

  • Reverse osmosis - desalinization
  • Reuse - Naples is at 70% and Dade is at 7%
  • Wells pumping below the Biscayne aquafer to the Florida aquifer  which is brackish and needs desalinization

Lake Ochechobee is the 4th largest lake in the U.S. In the 1920's, overflow from its banks killed thousands after hurricanes.

When the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers fixed drainage systems by 2,000 miles of levies, canals, dikes there was a huge die-off of birds and animals who could no longer live based on the dry land.

The sheet flow of the Everglades was changed to a drain and dump into Biscayne Bay.

1 trillion gallons of untreated storm water flow out to tide each year which would be enough drinking water for 15 million people for one year.

Florida expects an increase of 60% growth by 2025.

Solutions to lack of water:
Landscapes that allow water to percolate to the aquifer.
