Concert to End Polio

A Concert to End Polio

This Concert is being presented through the generosity of a local Charitable Foundation, whose mission it is to promote the arts. It is their wish to remain anonymous. They requested that we focus the Concert exclusively on Rotary and its efforts to eradicate Polio. Thus it is named "A Concert to End Polio" in the name of the PolioPlus initiative to "End Polio Now."

This promises to be a memorable evening of music with the gentle sax of Dave Koz and the piano stylings of Shelly Berg, backed by the amazing UM Concert Jazz Band.

100% of the proceeds for this event goes to the PolioPlus Program of Rotary International.

100% of the $45 ticket is a tax deductible donation.

Tickets may be purchased directly from the Rotary Foundation of Coral Gables.

Join Mike Mills at the concert – he just bought tickets online!  You can use your credit card, or your PayPal account if you have one.

DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘BECAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

EXCHANGE OF CLUB BANNERS

One of the colorful traditions of many Rotary clubs is the exchange of small banners, flags or pennants. Rotarians traveling to distant locations often take banners to exchange at "make up" meetings as a token of friendship. Many clubs use the decorative banners they have received for attractive displays at club meetings and district events.

The Rotary International board recognized the growing popularity of the banner exchange back in 1959 and suggested that those clubs which participate in such exchanges give careful thought to the design of their banners in order that they be distinctive and expressive of the community and country of which the club is a part. It is recommended that banners include pictures, slogans or designs which portray the territorial area of the club.

The board was also mindful of the financial burden such exchanges may impose upon some clubs, especially in popular areas where many visitors make up and request to exchange. In all instances, clubs are cautioned to exercise discretion and moderation in the exchange of banners in order that the financial obligations do not interfere with the basic service activities of the club.

Many clubs choose to display their collection of banners. If you look up the Port Townsend Rotary Club in Washington on the internet, you’ll find displayed over 250 banners from all over the world that have been exchanged. On the Rotary Club of Topsfield, Boxford and Middleton, MA’s website, they are asking clubs to submit photos of their banners. The site currently has a banner directory of over 150 submissions with links to the websites of each club. Check out http://www.rotarytbm.org/bank.htm#top. It’s interesting to see how different each banner can be. If you club banner doesn’t appear – take a photo of it and add it their collection.

Exchanging club banners is a very pleasant custom, especially when a creative and artistic banner tells an interesting story of community pride. The exchange of banners is a significant tradition of Rotary and serves as a tangible symbol of our international fellowship.

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

WORDS FROM A GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE TEAM MEMBER:

“In Warsaw, Poland, Woijeich Sierpinski, a Rotary Club President, took me on a tour that I will never forget.  We visited his parent’s house – where they lived during WW II.  There in the kitchen, under a dusty stack of crates was a secret wood panel in the floor.  Woijeich removed the panel to reveal a tiny room underneath the kitchen floor where his parents hid their neighbors – a Jewish family – during the war.  As I stood speechless, listening to Woijeich describe how they evaded the Nazis, I realized the full value of the Group Study Exchange program.”  Ian Oxman, Group Study Exchange member from California.

ProEnergy-Home energy saving

http://www.proenergyconsultants.com/

Do you think your utility bills are higher than they should be?

Do you suspect that your home is not as energy efficient as it should be?

Do you feel cold or drafty places in your home?

Do you feel big temperature differences from room to room?

Would you like to know what changes to make to your home to make it as energy efficient as possible?

Your local Pro Energy Consultant can perform an energy audit on your home, showing you where your home is wasting energy and exactly how you can start saving money on your energy bills.

Your local Pro Energy Consultant has the experience and expertise to discover where your home is wasting energy and what changes you can make that will save you money. With gas, oil and electricity prices rising everyday, Americans are paying more for their utilities than ever before.

If you regularly receive utility bills totaling in the hundreds of dollars range, you’re probably paying too much for your energy, month after month, season after season, year after year.

Once an energy audit has been performed on your home, your Pro Energy Consultant can guide you through your options.

Your house is a system, like a 3 legged stool

Air barrier – outside air out inside air in

Thermal barrier – insulation of floors, window

Air Distribution system – venting ducts that are sealed and sized properly

These interact together to give a home performance.

·       Mechanical systems

·       Ventilation systems

·       Water heating systems

·       Appliances

·       Lighting

·       household electronics

Controlling the temperature of indoor air accounts for more than 50% of energy consumptions.

Other aspects are controllable, and home performance testing focuses on that 55% of controllable aspects.

If the house is not performing well and there is excessive energy usage:

·       Comfort issues

·       Temperature difference across different rooms of the house

·       Excessive moisture or humidity

·       Excessive dust

·       Staleness

·       http://livegreenhome.com/images/house_leaks_b63s.jpg

 How to achieve savings:

1.  Air sealing

2.  Duct sealing

3.  Minor reconfi of HVAC

Net investment from a homeowner  but with payback in energy savings

There is a return of investment with sound building principals to make the house work better.

Three things to make a house perform as it’s supposed to:

1.  Air seals

2.  Insulate!

3.  Duct seal!

FPL performs a FREE energy bill review, visual inspection of mechanical and duct energy saving tips BUT they do not do

1.  a blower door test

2.  infra-red scanning

3.  customized home energy action,

4.  no room by room pressure diagnostics by a fully independent third party

When heated air comes back to the A/C for it to recycle, high energy costs

$350 - $600 for a ProEnergy consultation.

Not in the room?  Turn your ceiling fan off.  It adds comfort to the room by circulating air not cooling it.
