Diana Phillips:

Reminded us about Jim Stehyle, a past member who was a long time Sergeant of Arms and dedicated Rotarian.   Four of our big hearted members were asked to participate in the JIM STEHYLE Essay Contest Committee.

Essay question to the children: We’re asking them to investigate and decide whether the enormous sum of money spent on NASA has been worth it or not.

Awards will be distributed at the South Miami Middle School Social Science Fair.  I (Ellen) spoke to the assembly to give these awards a few times and it is just a blast to see the miniature models and compare the projects!

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Healthcare During Retirement Years

About Agency Long Term Care Specialist: Rene Cibran, CLTC

Rene Cibran began his career in financial services in 1991 and has since devoted his efforts at helping clients with their financial goals. Mr. Cibran holds a Certified in Long Term Care (CLTC) designation and is the Agency Long Term Care Specialist for Linq Financial Group, a general agency of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual). http://ltc-miami.com/new/ltcmiami/about_pict.jpg

Rene is passionate about providing guidance to employer groups, couples and individuals; in helping them plan for their future retirement and the financial challenges they may face. Aside from his CLTC designation, Mr. Cibran’s personal experience with clients and his own family members make him uniquely qualified as a Long Term Care Specialist. From his Great-grandmother who lived until 104, to his Grandfather who was stricken with Alzheimer’s, to the untimely passing of his Brother at age 49; Rene understands the overwhelming, emotional and financial toll that chronic care places on families.

Mr. Cibran is very active in the community and a member of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Alzheimer’s Association, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, and FIU Alumni Association. Rene is an Advisory Council member for CoralGables @HOME, a program developed by the Coral Gables Community Foundation, to facilitate the fullest degree of independent living at home. Mr. Cibran received his Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA)  from Nova Southeastern University in 1994 and Bachelor’s Degree of Business Administration from Florida International University in 1980. Rene is fluent in both English and Spanish and resides in the City of South Miami, with his wife Aimee and their two children.

When social security was first enacted in 1935, benefits began a age 65. However, the average life expectancy was only 61.

There was little or no need for retirement planning since there were only a few years left to live past retirement.

Retirement success is determined by good decisions about:

·       Income

·       Liquidity

·       Health care

·       Legacy

Three primary sources of retirement income:

·       Pension plans

·       Social security

·       Personal savings

http://api.ning.com/files/s3FZsOjEkAMtdsnAPQUrdOAiqwbsSK3BXlArCJB8ynI_/healthcare.jpg

 Shifts in pension plans

60% of Americans in the 1970’s were covered by pension plans

We’re living much longer and it’s much more expensive

Work to build a secure future – Social security is the largest source of income for most elderly Americans today.  It was never intended to be your only source of income when you retire.

Saving and investing wisely are important not only for your and your family but for the whole country.

Now Social Security system is facing serious financial problems. More money is going out the door than coming into the system.

We’re living longer then ever before due to significant technological advances in healthcare, nutrition and medications.

Fastest growing segment of the population today are seniors over the age of 65.

On average by age 75 older adults have 2-3 chronic medical conditions and are the heaviest consumers of health care

 Baby boom tsunami 1946 – 1964

By 65 you have a 70% chance of needing substantial assistance through long term care for bathing, eating, dressing.

·       $59,520/year or $4,960 /month – medical care with a home health aid

·       $73,360/year,$7,800 /month – chronic extended care

What isn’t covered by Medicare?  Long term care (since 1997), acupuncture, cosmetic procedures.

Purchase private long term insurance – but by age 65 a person with chronic issues means that they are not eligible.

Class Act – benefits will allow pre-existing conditions with limits.  Disabled or those declined from a private insurance carrier are eligible.  Meant for those that are employed.

Medicare pays for first 20 days after a hospital stay

Then a portion until 180 days and then nothing.

Medicaid – a lot of creative tax and legal planning to qualify by transferring assets. IN 2005, this is a partnership plan and eligibility became much tougher.  On the positive side, now you must  buy a policy BUT if you deplete it –then you qualify for Medicaid – and your assets are shielded.  This was developed in 1980 and now recently got past.

Plan for your future and choose:

http://www.eldercarelegalservices.com/goldnestegg.3_op_800x683.jpg

$150-$250 month for long-term policy coverage versus the decision to subscribe to cable television with the same costs.

The baby boomers make healthcare a colossal demographic issue.
