2007 RI Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah

98th Rotary International Annual Convention

17-20 June 2007

Register NOW for the 2007 RI Convention in Salt Lake City.

Salt Lake City's stunning Rocky Mountain skyline, one of five reasons not to miss the 2007 RI Convention.

1. Reconnect with Rotary
Inspirational stories during the plenary sessions will remind you why you became a Rotarian. You'll gain a deeper knowledge of Rotary and its Foundation during workshops, discussion group sessions, and countless other networking opportunities the convention offers. You'll leave with a new sense of Rotary pride and purpose.

2. See old friends, make new ones
Attending a Rotary convention is like being part of the world's largest family reunion. Imagine the same camaraderie and fellowship you know in your club, multiplied by thousands. Whether on the convention floor and or in host events such as barbeques, you'll experience what Rotary fellowship is all about.

3. Celebrate your accomplishments
RI conventions celebrate Rotary's power to do good worldwide. Learn what a difference you and your fellow Rotarians make through volunteering and contributing. You will have the opportunity to meet or learn about beneficiaries of Rotary programs, including the next generation of peacemakers during the Rotary World Peace Symposium, a new convention event.

4. Location, location, location
Nestled in the Rocky Mountains, Salt Lake City is beautiful, clean, and friendly - and waiting to be explored by you. Whether your definition of fun is fine dining or mountain biking, the region has something for you. It's also the gateway to some of the greatest sights of the American West, so plan your vacation around the convention. Salt Lake City also boasts the world's largest genealogical database, which Rotarians can access in the House of Friendship during the convention.

5. Affordability
Salt Lake City is inexpensive and compact. The convention's centralized venue, the Salt Palace, is near many hotels and most Host Organization Committee activities, saving you time and money. With the city's reasonable hotel rates, this adds up to one of Rotary's most affordable conventions. If you register by 1 December, the basic registration fee is only US$275. Refer to "How to Register" and the registration form (PDF) for more details.

Rotary Rules - RYLA

http://www.rotary.org/programs/ryla/index.html

Each year, thousands of young people take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program worldwide. Young people ages 14-18 chosen for their leadership potential attend an all-expenses-paid seminar, camp, or workshop to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice. Rotary clubs and districts select participants and facilitate the event's curriculum.

RYLA aims to:
* Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth;
* Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders;
* Encourage leadership of youth by youth; and
* Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.

RYLA 2005 Camp Picture

RYLA was officially adopted by Rotary International in 1971, and is one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service. RYLA programs often lead to the formation or strengthening of Rotaract and Interact clubs. RYLA participants often go on to become Youth Exchange students or Ambassadorial Scholars

Amy does this for fun, along with her husband Marc. RYLA is one of the best kept secret in district. It originally was called S4TL. Amy had been a Rotarian for only two months in 2003 when she was asked to be the Committee Chair. She was in the midst of starting a network of urgent care centers but took on this challenge and has found it totally rewarding.

High school students going into 10th and 11th grade are taught the meaning of teamwork, conflict resolution, communication such as how to run special events, how to conduct a meeting, all the components of consensus building.

Students are usually drawn from the Interact Club students and student govt. and community looking for leadership programs

There are motivational speakers covering topics such as college prep and stress mgt for high achievers.

The kids are asked to bring $5 and must decide which charity to donate their combined money. Food is provided for free. The kids must room together with others they do not know from all over the district Monroe Dade Broward and the Bahamas.

Interactions and acceptance from other kids change them
The energy is amazing.

2 yrs ago 90 students registered. Students are required to pay $25 of the tuition. This financial investment signifies the program as more than getting something for nothing.

The District gives no money for RYLA it is tuition based funding and club fundraisers only. Weston Sunset RC members have a fundraising bar-be-que and also spend the first night playing games with the kids.

Diana Phillips mentioned that many of the attendees at RYLA go on to become club officers. In 4-5 days they learn so much and practice it. This is serious fun. It is amazing who much they retain of what they worked on - agendas, board member involvement, communicating with committees

Team challenge by choice a cope course. This is the way to keep a high school kids motivated.

Follow up afterwards - at the Rotary District Conference, there is a program where RYLA kids run their own program

Each teenager is allow to go through the program one time. Each team votes a best team member, and that person is invited to come back as a proctor / counselor.

It is one of the few programs open to children of Rotarians. If your child attends, you will not be able to volunteer
