Annual Rebuilding Together Volunteer Day

in Coconut Grove

http://www.rebuildingtogethermiami.org/index.html

When the choice for families in need to choose between medicine and a roof over their head, Rebuilding Together steps in to help.  Subcontractors volunteer their goods and services.

RCSM has helped the last four years…

This year’s home is owned by Ms. Irina Dingle, age 77 who is caretaker to her sister who is handicapped and her husband  who has Alzheimers. They have lived in this house for 44 years.

Restaurants supply breakfast and lunch.

You can see, when you leave at the end of the day, that you’ve made a difference.

April Programming Committee Member Ann Fisher introduced our speaker

Jim Hummel aka Rick Shaw

A Trip Down Memory Lane

South Florida radio Legend Rick Shaw was one of the first Top forty radio jocks at WQAM in Miami in the late Fifties. Rick was still on the radio playing those very same songs at Majik 102.9 in Miami until 2007.  Shaw began his radio career at age 17 reading the news and later, spinning records for an East St. Louis, Ill., station in 1956. He was a fixture on the Miami airwaves since 1960.

Rick was the longest running radio personality in the greater Miami-Fort Lauderdale market.  He last hosted the WMXJ Majic 102.7 FM morning show.  He entertained three generations of listeners, and celebrated his 50th anniversary on the radio in June of 2006.

After working in Omaha, Nebraska and Denver, Colorado during some of the coldest winters on record, Rick headed South.  After moving to Miami in 1960, started with WCKR 610AM (later WIOD) In 1963, he movedover to WQAM 560AM.  While there, more listeners tuned into his show than all the other Miami stations combined.

Rick hosted a Saturday Hop afternoon show on TV on Channel 10 in the 60’s, and in 1965 the “Rick Shaw Show” aired Monday through Friday on Channel 10 and featured local performers lip synching the latest rock and roll songs.

In the ‘70’s, Rick became Program Director for WAXY-FM 106.7.  He finally ended up at Majic 102.7, the only Goldies station in S. FL.  He has been one of our favorite local “disk jockeys” from 1960 until 2007 when he “retired” from having to get up at 4:00 AM for WMXJ (Magic’s) early morning show with Donna Davis.

While Rick retired from the morning show at Majic, but he certainly has not “retired.”  Rick’s voice is still on Majic with regularity, but his most important activity is serving as President of the Majic Children’s Fund, an organization that has raised nearly $3 million in the last ten years on behalf of children.

Rick Shaw started at age 17.  English teacher was a part-time worker in St. Louis and asked him to fill in reading the news.  DJ’s called in sick and they called in Nebraska, Ohio, Miami in 1960’s WCKR 610 radio (now WIOD) 1963 WQAM more listeners than all of the other radio stations combined.  Channel 10 local performers lip syncing.  Retired from getting up at 4am to do his show.

He started his presentation with:

The similarity between Abe Lincoln and JFK – Kennedy Lincoln Mystery.

http://www.snopes.com/history/american/lincoln-kennedy.asp

We all got to view his video on the history of Rock and Roll – 207 #1 songs from January 1, 1960 – January 1, 1970, the decade that went from B&W to stereo, color and Woodstock – with the most powerful music of all time…

207 songs in the video – Magic Children’s Fund mandate charity raised $3 million bucks.  The top three companies the fund has written checks to cover bills:   Publix, Toys R Us, FPL
