Shake-A-Leg Miami, Inc. was created in 1990 to offer a universally accessible watersports facility for education and recreation. The facility is open to the public with emphasis on people with disabilities, youth and families. It targets a wide variety of participants---from young scouts to youth-at-risk, from college students to seniors. Additionally, it serves as an international model for the development of accessible programs open to people of all ages, gender, race, ethnic background, and level of ability.

Boats Used:
2.4mR, Freedom, Sonar.
This Coconut Grove based group offers sailing lessons for children with or without disabilities, from ages 5 to 14. Instructor:student ratio is 1:4, and swimming proficency is not required to participate. Children learn to navigate 20 foot boats and smaller dinghy type boats, in which they can learn to sail solo.

Getting There:
U.S.1 to Sw 27th Avenue and head south. Turn left on S. Bayshore Drive. Shake-A-Leg is on the right, opposite Monty's.

Shake-a-Leg Miami's twenty-foot 'Independence' sailboats are designed to be universally accessible with two special seats and all lines coming to the cockpit to give wheelchair-bound individuals maximum safety and control. These sailboats can accommodate most individuals with disabilities including those with spinal cord injuries, amputations, Muscular Dystrophy, Spina Bifida, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome, blindness, deafness and other  neuromuscular injuries.

We also have three, twenty-three foot ‘Sonar' sailboats, which are the boats of choice for disabled sailing competitions worldwide.

Fourteen nine-foot 'Access Dinghies' which are also non-sinkable and non-capsizable and can be ontrolled by the use of a joystick. One model has been made electronic so that a quadriplegic may sail independently.

Twelve one-person and twelve two-person Ocean sit-on-top kayaks can accommodate groups of thirty people at a time

For safety backup and race management, we have three powerboats and one pontoon boat.

Free one-hour introductory sailing and kayaking outings are available to residents and visitors with disabilities. For appointments, please call our office at (305) 858-5550, Monday through Friday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to register.
