|
Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.
Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.
To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.
How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?
Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.
Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to
http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf
It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

Our Speaker Today:
Dr. Gerald "Jerry" Schumm
School Historian, Ponce de Leon Middle School
Jerry is working on a project to complete the history of Ponce de Leon Middle School, and shared with us interesting facts about the history of the school as well as raising awareness of the project. He is now retired, after a diversified career which including teaching at the school, and is speaking to as many people who attended the school (especially in the early years) as possible.
We learned a lot about the history of this school, which originally was a High School, including:
- Students who first entered Ponce de Leon High School came from the surrounding areas of Larkin, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove and Silver Bluff
- The site for the new school was selected because it was inexpensive property
- Construction of the first three buildings began in 1925 and studentes entered in 1926
- The first three buildings constructed on the campus were the Administration Building, Gymnasium and Home Economics Building. The Home Economics building has been torn down, the other two remain
- At Ponce de Leon High School, fraternities and sororities flourished, even though they were illegal
- In 1950, Coral Gables Senior High was established and Ponce de Leon became a middle school
- Ponce de Leon High School was originally known as the Cavaliers, but the name was given to Coral Gables Senior High
- In 1950, Ponce de Leon Junior High School became known as "The Blue Devils", perhaps because Principal Rath went to Duke
- Ponce de Leon remained a Junior High School for 40 years, then in 1990 became a Middle School
- "The Galleon" is the name of the Ponce de Leon Yearbook
- Some noted graduates include Coral Gables Mayors, Keith Phillips, George Corrigan; Coral Gables City Commissioners William Kerdyk, Chip Whithers, Ralph Cabrera; Dante Fascell, Janet Reno, Astronaut on 1983 Spaceship Columbia, Bill Lenoir; Jazz Pianist, George Winston; NFL San Francisco 49's, Frank Gore
- If you attended Ponce de Leon, or know someone who did, and may have a yearbook, other article of interest, or stories from the early years, please contact Jerry Schumm at Jerschumm@aol.com
