DIANA:

Lydia White says I may share this information with you, as "Rotary is my extended family."

She has had surgery on her nose to remove a skin cancer ("from all those weekends on Sunset Drive, so wear that hat.")  Husband Harry Barsh also had surgery to repair an aneurysm.  Not a very comfortable recovery for either of them, but coming along.  It's a good thing, Lydia reports, that they are "tough old birds!"   You can write to her at whitewho@aol.com

DICTIONARY / ATLAS PROJECT

South Miami Rotarians,

Third graders from South Miami K-8 Center and (back, from left to right)

Jennifer Dewsnap, Manager South Miami Branch, Bob Straile, former South Miami Rotary President and

Major Michael Mills, president of the South Miami Rotary.

I thought I'd share a photo from the dictionary giveaway at South Miami K-8 Center. WE gave away about 125 dictionaries to all the third graders. The kids were really excited and began looking up words immediately. They like the word "hullabaloo" (I hope I spelled it correctly).  We also gave one to each of the few teachers. They were very appreciative and thankful.

We also distributed about 80 dictionaries to all the 3rd graders at Ludlum Elementary.   David Fairchild (4/8/08) and then Sunset Elementaries will get theirs.

Thank you for all your hard work at the Art Festivals - which makes this type of project possible.  The distribution event takes less than a half hour. It is quite fun watching the enthusiasm of the kids. We'll announce when we're doing Sunset in case you can join us.

Thanks to Linda Kaplan and Bob Straile for helping with the distribution - and especially Jennifer Dewsnaps for putting the project together and following through. Also, I believe this project was developed by Ellen Book, I know she was involved in reviewing the potential dictionaries. We ended up with a very high quality Webster's softcover.

Miami-Dade Public Librarian

South Miami Branch Library Manager

www.mdpls.org  / dewsnapj@mdpls.org

Librarians hardly have time to read as they concern themselves with five points:
1-  Outreach – Rotary, schools booktalks, city and county officials
2-  Collection development – donations, weeding, ordering
3-  Programming – incredible amount such as classes on word processing, internet, holding family days, storytelling, yoga, belly dancing, tax assistance, & SMART
4-  Supervising 12 fulltimers and 4 parttimers -  keeping them on target and busy with ongoing changes and demands.  New philosophy of greeting and rove – no one is left sitting behind the desk.  New service point called Express CKO – allows you to take out books without waiting

5-  Facility – clean and all is working  A/C, roof, etc.

Promotion of the library and its offerings is our number one job, at all times, to everyone

SMART – tutoring program on Saturdays assigned to K-12 one tutor for Science Math and Reading Tutoring.  42 branches.

Borrower by Mail allows you to receive titles without leaving your home – order a book to be shipped to you via the mail for $2.00 per item.

It only take two minutes to get a library card.

April Programming Committee Member Ann Fisher introduced our speaker

Noreen Frye

University of Miami’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

“Education Opportunities for Seniors”

(305) 284-6554 / www.education.miami.edu/irp

Noreen Frye is the Director fo the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UM.  The program was formerly named the UM Institute for Retired Professionals.  The program enables anyone over 50 years old to audit regular university courses from Sept – July or take five-week summer sessions in such classes as creative writing, literature, drawing computers to name a few.

Noreen responsibilities include developing an ongoing educational program of daily classes, public relations, and marketing, membership development, creation of educational field trips, fundraising, and general administration.

She is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with a B.A. in legal studies and business.  Her previous experiences include administrative, marketing and public relations positions in the software industry and in the hospitality / tourism fields.  In addition, she is a swimming, water aerobics and yoga instructor at various sites in Miami.

Exercise:
Put your watch on your other wrist – it’s painful.

What did we do prior to relying on paper, pencil, computers.  We relied on memory.  As you age, are you useless?  Not true! You can continue to work and grow your brain…or you can let it go to seed.

Taking classes changes your routine.  Challenge yourself everyday by changing hands for regular activities: put your watch on a difference wrist, vary your sequence.

Worried that forgetting = dementia or Alzheimer’s.  Only worry if you’re in the middle of a familiar place and you have no idea how you got there.   Memory Power = brain fitness.

Fun tests – adults in the classroom revert back to all of their behaviors they had when they were last in school.

Put information you are trying to memorize into chunks – think about how pictures are laid out on the paper – when you’re learning something quiet and focus is necessary.  Visual person is more successful at this test.

Exposure to music and theatre – dependent on your environment

At these UM courses you are auditing.  There are no papers, attendance rules or tests.  You can take any types of class, with permission from the professor, just to learn something new.

Special classes just for the institute are six weeks in duration starting next on April 21 – May 30, 2008 with choices in art history, current events, new deal with Paul George, film discussion, computer classes, Spanish and French classes.

During our youth and worklives we spent our educational experience striving to get a degree or credits for your professional education. These courses allow you to explore your creativity, connect with folks, and feel good.

$410 year – for auditing any class with professor approval
$125 for a 6 week period.

Additional benefits:

Discount tix to Ring theatre,

campus events,

ability to use the Richter Library.

Lifelong learning is about giving back – you might end up being a teacher and prepare to speak about it…

The institute is situated in the renovated Faculty Club (5,500 sq ft.)  Parking permit costs $168 per year for students.  Parking is free after 4pm.
