WHAT TYPES OF ROTARY FOUNDATION RECOGNITION EXIST FOR CLUBS?

(pause  -- If NO Answer – Ask the Question AGAIN!)

ANSWER:

100 PERCENT PAUL HARRIS FELLOW CLUB!

Rotary Clubs in which 100 percent of all dues paying members are Paul Harris Fellows receive special recognition from The Rotary Foundation.  Qualifying Rotary Clubs receive a special large club recognition banner, and the club name is engraved on a plaque in the Rotary Foundation Hall of Honor at Rotary International World Headquarters in Evanston, IL.

The Trustees of The Rotary Foundation present clubs recognition banners, each year, to the three Rotary Clubs in each District, having the number one, two and third highest per capita giving to the Annual Programs Fund. Then any club with $100 per capita and 100% Member Participation in Annual Program Fund will receive a banner. Also, a larger banner is awarded to those clubs that are a 100% Sustaining Member Club in Annual Programs Fund contributions.

WILL OUR CLUB BE RECOGNIZED BY THE ROTARY FOUNDATION THIS YEAR?

Programming Chair Donna Gaines introduced today’s speaker…

John H. Parker, Professor FIU

Office: 305-348-3083
E-mail:
parker@fiu.edu

“Climate Change”

Dr. Parker is a professor of Environmental Science and Chemistry at FIU.  His research interests focus on ecological landscaping, passive solar cooling, energy efficiency, solar energy, energy policy and environmental education.

Starting in 1972, he has 37 years as founding faculty at FIU.

Every volume of air has 1/3 more carbon than it did during the industrial revolution.  This is the result of burning coal and the demands of transportation.

~Black carbon is soot.

~Methane is a major cause 23X more powerful in trapping heat than CO2.

~Ozone and smog in urban areas is a huge cause.

Skeptics say that global warming is due to natural variations!

Most warming occurred from 1900-1940.

There was a noticeable cooling period from 1940-1970 and 5% of scientists started to research a potential ice age due to two decades of cooling.

There has been minimal warming of the atmosphere due to cyclical solar radiation.

Particulates are creating more clouds and reflecting heat.  Predicted temperatures are very close to those observed.

Green house gases alone are a  basic mechanisms for prediction.  There will be approximately a 5 degree temperature rise in the rate of change based on calculations.

Climate data before 1500 is largely unknown but the basic anaylsis for future predictions is correct.

Weather is not climate.

Expect more precipitation, rain and snow, will occur in short periods

Realize that there has been a huge disinformation campaign bent on skewing the scientific data.

The Royal Society of London criticized Exxons funding of organizations misinforming the public about the science of climate change.

When and if Greenland’s ice mass melts the sea level will  rise 23 feet and there is already a very rapid increase in the melting of their land ice.

Predictions:  FL in 2130, then  2100,  now 2080 (middle of road guess) will experience a one meter rise of the sea level.  It will impact acidification.  It will kill the coral reefs, mangroves

There will be longer fire seasons with more forest fires.

Going hotter than 2 degree centigrade will cause massive destruction to the environment as we know it.

Solutions

~we need an 80% reduction in Co2 by 2050.

~Miami Dade must reduce its carbon footprint by just 2% for a very positive impact.

~We need to not build coal plants and shut down the most polluting one.

~Offshore oil drilling needed to provide natural gas and biomass.

~Consider a more vegetarian lifestyle as there is a 10X increase in your the carbon footprint by eating meat!

~Save the rainforest

~Soot diesel engines on ship need a computer generated kites to reduce the need for fuel.

The worst impacts of global warming will be on the poorest countries with extreme droughts.

There is currently a soot cloud impacting the Himalayas causing melting of the water supply for 2 billion people.

Personal Co2 = 27 tons of CO2/person/year from the use of cars, airplanes, and from our homes.

Two excellent organizations to help:

Solar electric light fund

www.solarcookers.org

from the “15 ways to go Green handout”:

~Reduce your transportation carbon footprint.

~Empty the trunk

~Inflate tire pressure to max psi

~Combine errands

~LED lights for the home

~Low flow, shower head and solar

~Attend the Earthday Workshop in Pinecrest Gardens   how to cut youre a/c bill in ½ Village of Pinecrests Earth Day Fair on Sunday, August 25, 2010

~Read information from reputable sources such as the American Meteorological Association Royal Academy of Science in Great Britain

NOT just forwarded exploitive emails

FPL our speaker disagrees with nuclear power based on the upfront costs and radioactive wastes.  No building for the next decade so their nuclear plant would be helpful in 20 years from now.

Solar gives you 15% back tax-free.  Green jobs are local and higher paying with good salaries.

View global warming as a breathtaking opportunity disguised as an insolvable problem. John Gardener  - Common Cause

In my view, climate change is the most severe problem that we are facing today more serious even than the threat of terrorism David A. King, Chief Scientific Advisor to the British Government
