MATCHING MONEY WITH PEOPLE FOR POSITIVE RESULTS!

The Rotary Foundation has been so effective because it matches money with people.

In the words of the Rotary Foundation Founder, Arch Klump: “Money alone does little good.  Individual service is helpless without money.  The two together can be a Godsend to civilization.”

YOUR FINANCIAL RESOURCES AND YOUR TIME, ENERGY AND TALENT ARE USEFUL IN THE ROTARY MISSION.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS AND YOUR EFFORTS IN SUPPORT OF THE ROTARY FOUNDATION AND ROTARY INTERNATIONAL.

Yours in Rotary Service,

Elihu F. Phares , Annual Giving Chair

DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘BECAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

Slow Food-School Gardens

The slow foods movement began in Rome in 1996 when McDonalds built a restaurant at the foot of the Roman steps.  Their focus was to make food it in one minute that you can eat in three minutes.  This philosophy is the opposite of enjoying wines and food.  The fast food culture imported from the US has flourished in Europe.  Our traditional ways have been left behind.  In Europe it’s particularly shocking because they made an art out of food preparation and consumption.

When she lived in Cortona, Italy, she was invited to a meeting of Slow Food Italy held at the top of the mountain. All food-related businessmen met and mingled over a great meal with conviviality.

Under the Tuscan Sun author Frances Mayes invited her to this dinner.  It inspired her to enjoy local food and appreciate regional food.  It’s not about only about the food and the flavor - it is about supporting the local economy.

In 2003, the movement established a New York group.  Now there are 225 chapters / “convivial” around the USA in every city. They all seek to support local food and farmers.

Eating is almost a political act nowadays.  We encourage the community to understand that 30 miles south of Miami is a fragile necklace of conventional and organic farms that have been lost to development.

feature1

Immigrant children experience the brunt of obesity because the parents give up their traditional food pathways and fast food wins.  They gain 3.7% of their body mass index for every year that they live in the USA.

Any school wanting a garden has gotten one. It is a 4X8 raised container box for $500.  There are dinners which are  fundraisers.  There are local garden clubs are partners.

Coral Gables Elementary has three raised gardens each 32 sq ft each.  In each square foot a different vegetable is planted.  26 gardens are now fully mature and weve returned to record the impact.  The children in turn teach their parents. $10,000 for all 26 gardens for pre-K through high school impacting 5,000 students from November - June.

Leisure City and Florida City has a large population of Mexicans.  The flood is due to the violence in Mexico.  These immigrants raise our food and their children suffer from poor nutrition.  We want to go to these two areas and put gardens and nutritional programs in those schools.
