STUDENT-RUN PROGRAM
Kids learn to face ethical dilemmas

BY ANA VECIANA-SUAREZ
“…Started in 1998, the youth ethics initiative was the idea of Roy Gonas, who was then assuming the office of district governor for Rotary International in the southeast Florida and Grand Bahama Island district.

Through Interact Clubs in high schools, he explored the possibility of offering a program that would pinpoint the need for civic involvement as well as prepare students to face ethical dilemmas after leaving school.

The experience was an eye-opener, Gonas says. ''They were so mature. They were so sophisticated. They were genuinely interested. It was such a joy.''

Gonas eventually recruited area Kiwanis Clubs, and the two service outfits put together an annual conference for teenagers in South Florida to discuss integrity and morality in business, sports, politics and professional and student life. The nonprofit organization received funding from several organizations, including the Children's Trust, the North Dade Medical Foundation and the Batchelor's Foundation…”
