Former Mayor Kathy McCann passed away – we offered a moment of silence In recognition of her life and good works.

From the Miami Herald Posted on Sunday, 04.26.09:

City mourns passing of its first female mayor, Cathy McCann

Former South Miami Mayor Cathy McCann, an activist who spent 16 years on the city commission, died of cancer April 18. The city is considering naming a section of Southwest 87th Street in her honor.

BY LAURA MORALES

llmorales@MiamiHerald.com

She had an encyclopedic knowledge of the South Miami city charter. She pushed for affordable housing and responsible development.

And she broke the glass ceiling as the city's first woman mayor, serving two terms.

Cathy McCann, who spent 14 years on the dais and helped build 35 Habitat for Humanity homes in the city, died of cancer on April 18 at South Miami Hospital. She was 75.

Improving the city was her passion, said Peter McCann, her husband of 49 years.

''Zoning was her main issue, what got her into government. She believed it determines everything about how the city goes,'' he said.

The fifth of nine children, she was born Catherine Rutherford in 1933 in Portland, Maine -- where she would meet her future husband.

Peter McCann described their two-year courtship as ``nothing very dramatic, just getting to know each other.''

After marrying, the couple moved to West Miami in 1961, settling in South Miami nine years later, he said.

Upon her arrival, McCann, a graduate of Kalamazoo College, got a copy of the city's first comprehensive plan. Studying it sparked her interest in government, she told UM history professor Greg Bush in a 1999 interview.

Before running for office, she served on the city's environmental review, commercial development and public relations boards. She was first elected in 1980 and won the mayor's seat in 1990.

As mayor, she started a municipal recycling program, led efforts to build housing for seniors, directed resources to low-income areas of the city and started after-school programs.

She called the weeks following Hurricane Andrew her most trying times in office, Peter McCann said.

''We slept at City Hall for two weeks after the hurricane so she could manage the cleanup,'' he said.

It was during her tenure as mayor that McCann contacted Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami. She wanted affordable homes to replace crack houses and a seedy apartment block of which she oversaw demolition of. She served on the board of directors for 12 years, five of them as president.

''She was determined that all of the citizens of her beloved city enjoy a high quality of living,'' said Anne Manning, Habitat's executive director.

The former mayor is survived by three children, Susan McCann, 46, who lives in Houston; Catherine Deckers, 44, who lives in Merritt Island; and Peter Jr., 42, who lives in Palmetto Bay. She had seven grandchildren.

At their Tuesday meeting, commissioners considered co-naming a section of Southwest 87th Street after McCann, but tabled the matter for later discussion.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. May 2 at First United Methodist Church of South Miami, 6565 Red Rd.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in McCann's memory to Habitat for Humanity, 3800 NW 22nd Ave., Miami, FL 33142.

DID YOU MISS A MEETING‘CAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

http://www.rotary.org/newsroom/downloadcenter/pdfs/eclub_list.pdf

Visit www.rotary6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.  Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club. To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to

http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

1.  Read a variety of current articles in the programs section and/or choose articles from the Archived Programs list and/or information from the Avenues of Service pages. You will be required to answer questions. There is space on the makeup request form for up to three articles to be reviewed, however you will need to read more than three to meet your 30 minute visit obligation.

2.  At the end of your 30 minute visit, click on Make-up Request Form from the drop-down menu at the top of the page OR the bottom of each make-up program.

3.  Read the Makeup Request Form carefully, and follow instructions. The form will appear once you press the SUBMIT button (one time only) and an email copy will be sent to the email address you proved. This can be forwarded to your club secretary so your attendance records are properly updated.

Rotarians can also designate eClub One as their home club. Members in eClub One are usually experienced Rotarians who are unable to belong to a traditional club because they reside in a remote location or they are engaged in a demanding travel schedule. Those applying for membership in eClub One must provide an endorsement from their current District Governor, current Rotary club President, along with letters of reference from two Rotarian colleagues of their current club..

eClub One has standard requirements for memberships, including charges for dues and administrative fees. Participants also must be willing to take part regularly in the Rotary eClub One community by taking on tasks and responsibilities. Members are required to also have regular access to the Internet and be willing to acquire the necessary skills to participate in the activities of Rotary eClub One.

Rotary and eClub One are on the cutting edge of the technology age. How this evolves will only be determined by periodic evaluation and the involvement of its members. For today, however, it is an outstanding tool for Rotarians to makeup missed meetings and keep in touch with Rotary happenings throughout the world.

For make-ups anywhere around the world when traveling internationally: http://rotary.org/support/clubs/index.html

Insights about the Current Economic Situation Facing the US

The mission of Chamber South is to maintain a leadership role in the community through programs, services and events that will enhance the quality of life and economic well being of South Miami, Kendall, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay and Greater South Dade.

The link between our quality of life and a thriving business community is undeniable. Without jobs, there is no commerce. Without commerce, there is an erosion of education, recreation, families, the arts and public safety. Chamber South strives to improve the quality of life of area residents by working to improve business conditions. It is the strong belief of the Chamber that businesses must be successful for the community to flourish as a whole. Chamber South has a responsibility to help its members and communities thrive. Will you do your part keep our quality of life strong?

Chamber of South – merged into one large entity from many other chambers.

Many of their committees hold events.  The Military Affairs Committee holds a golf tournament for friendship bonds and networking.

One future goal is the environmental greening and attempt to attain platinum certification of the Chamber South building.  They will be posting their light bills to show the savings with newly installed bulbs.

What business people can do for each other?  Buy local, stay local campaign. Florida’s governor has a plan for a trickle down backyard economic campaign that the Chamber will help its members to participate in.

To help the economy:

~Be a tourist in your own town.

~Spend money locally was the push for the economic summit.

~Don’t be afraid to spend.

~The psychology in times of recession is to hold on to money.  Merchants are being hit the hardest.  Entertainment and restaurants are not as impacted as people seek a diversion from their problems.

There is a health benefit to not being anxious and worried.  Learn to have honest conversations.   Visit Mary Scott on
Tuesdays from 5:15pm – 6:15pm when she teaches Beginning Yoga at the Green Monkey.  Your 1st class will be free.

There has been a 55% down turn in membership for most Chambers.  Holding on to the larger companies is more difficult.  Most members in Chamber South have 30 employees or fewer.  In economic downturns this organization thrives because it balances membership with events.  Proof is their successful turnouts at activities
