DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘BECAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or
after, the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to
http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

Our Speaker Today:

Howard Simon, Executive Director, ACLU of Florida

.

Howard Simon was appointed Executive Director of the ACLU of Florida on October 1, 1997. Dr. Simon was raised in New York, and graduated from the City College of New York. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota in legal and political philosophy and social ethics.

Prior to his appointment as Executive Director of the Florida affiliate of the ACLU in 1997, Simon served as Executive Director of the Michigan affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union since 1974.

Prior to his work with the ACLU, he taught philosophy at the University of Minnesota and was a faculty member in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at DePauw University in Indiana.

As Executive Director of the Florida affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, Simon has overall responsibility for ACLU's legal, public education, legislative lobbying, and membership and fund-raising programs.

During Simon's tenure with the ACLU, the organization has been involved in cases and controversies dealing with school vouchers, charter schools, religious practices in the public schools, abortion rights, the Terri Schiavo case as well as physician-assisted suicide, and numerous controversies involving freedom of speech.

The ACLU has been extensively involved in addressing the need for electoral reforms in Florida.  The organization played a key role in securing the end of the use of paperless electronic voting systems in Florida, leading to the 2008 election in which every county used the optical scan system.  The organization has also led efforts to end Florida's policy requiring the lifetime voting ban of former felons.

Mr. Simon spoke of the many rights which the ACLU protects, including the rights of those they do not necessarily agree with. Unlike the NAACP and Anti Defamation League, the ACLU protects everyone's rights regardless of race, color, creed or sexual orientation.

Mr. Simon shared with us the lawsuit that the ACLU filed against the Federal Government in the 1940's, during World War II. As a result of the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Federal Government had thousands of Japanese Americans snet to a compound for confinement. This was a clear violation fo an American's constituional rights and under President Reagan's administration, restitution was finallymade to the survivors and families, along with an apology by the President.
