Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. “Toothbrushes for Kids"

http://n-sta-smile.com/IMG_0095.jpg

At least 1 in 5 kids don’t see the dentist each year…

Only 26 states have at least 75% of their citizens on community water supplies with adequate fluoride to prevent tooth decay…

This project represents Dr. Linda’s passion for children’s health.  Gets down in the trenches to work with migrant workers, children who are financially disadvantaged.

Children are exposed to a lot of diseases, exposing them at an early age to dental hygiene saves money and pain. It ties into health and well being.

http://n-sta-smile.com/poc1.jpg

Everyone loves the product and the concept of putting this recyclable, self foaming brush on each elementary school aged child’s school lunch tray.

There’s no expiration date for storage, no drooling, no spitting. No water needed.

The school board is not currently funding it.  We may get pilot funding from Nova Southeastern.  Per school child per year $27 or .15 cents per day for the 180-day school year.

Treasure Island students get free dental screenings

BY MARCELLA MCCARTHY, Special to The Miami Herald
The Miami Herald

"Open your mouth and say, 'Ahhhh' ''
The instruction echoed throughout recently as children received free dental screenings at Treasure Island Elementary School in North Bay Village.
The screenings served as a preventative measure for low-income children whose parents can't take them to the dentist for regular check-ups -- either because they can't afford it, don't have the time, don't know they should, or a combination of all three.
"This is a good thing to do so that everyone here can get good and healthy teeth so they won't have cavities and have to have golden teeth,'' Christian Mondragon, a fifth-grader at the school, said after completing his screening.
The event was the third in a series organized by UNIDAD of Miami Beach as part of its Oral Health Initiative, and funded by The Children's Trust, which pays for programs for kids throughout Miami-Dade with taxpayer money. UNIDAD also provides services for at-risk kids.
On Feb. 5, the kids walked into a classroom-turned-clinic at their school. There, about 50 faculty members and students from Miami Dade College's Dental Hygiene Program examined about 230 children  -- or 7,360 teeth. The screenings lasted from 9 a.m. until noon.
First, two-person teams examined each child's mouth -- one MDC student performed the exam, while the other recorded the findings.
Each child was then taken to a second station where -- with the help of hand puppets manipulated by MDC students -- they learned how to clean their teeth.
To improve their own brushing skills, the kids were handed a pink, footlong
toothbrush, and brushed the hand puppets' large teeth in circles. There was a half-dozen puppets: a green-and-yellow dynosaur, a black-and-white doggie, and a beige penguin.
Before the children walked out, they were given a "goodie bag'' containing nutrition information, and a sample of toothbrushes and toothpaste to help keep their pearly whites sparkling.
One of the toothbrushes is cutting edge: N-STA-SMILE is a pre-pasted, miniature, disposable, recyclable toothbrush that doesn't require any water or rinsing. The toothbrushes were donated by Dr. Lynda Colaizzi of Miami.
Third-grader Tylor Housen declared the program "awesome.''
Before he even had a chance to try out the N-STA-SMILE toothbrush, he was
smiling and proclaimed that he was going to change his habits. "From now on, I'm going to brush my teeth two times a day and not eat candy and different kinds of soda.''
Lotty Senexta enrolled in the Dental Hygiene Program at MDC, she said, because as a child she had horrible tooth decay and toothaches, and her mother couldn't afford to take her to the dentist.
"Everybody in the medical field is worrying about the body and forgetting about the teeth,'' Senexta said. "It's been a priceless experience, being able to teach other kids that after their baby teeth fall out, their permanent teeth will last them a lifetime - if they take good care of them.''
The MDC students were overseen by their program director, Dr. Susan Kass, as well as by dentist in private practice, Dr. Barry Ragone of Miami Beach.
The results of the dental screenings are conveyed to the children's parents. If a child needs dental work that their parents can't afford, the family may be able to get free dental work from  the MDC clinic or Ragone, who works closely with UNIDAD.
Dr. Elliot Sklar, health program manager of UNIDAD of Miami Beach, said the free screenings can save not just smiles, but teeth and gums.
"We have 5-year-olds who need root canals; those are expensive procedures. Dr. Ragone works with us, very generously, so that we are able to offer a comprehensive treatment to the children,'' Sklar said.
