President Mike:

Fellow South Miami Rotarians,

I am sorry to inform you that President-Elect-Elect Pansy Graham's father passed away in Jamaica on Monday morning.  Fortunately, Pansy was able to visit with him late Sunday night. Then, he passed away a few hours after she left his bedside.

Please keep Pansy and her family in your thoughts and prayers during this time of mourning.

South Miami Rotarians,

The letter below sounds like an updated version of the Harlem Globetrotters that we saw as kids. What a great deal of fun!

I wonder if a member would like to take the lead on bringing them to South Miami. I was thinking that the new Community Center would be a good venue but I don't know how big this could get. Perhaps we'd need the High School or U.M. basketball venue.  Either way, I'd like to see our inner-city youth attend.
Any takers?

Dear South Miami Rotary Club,

The Harlem Ambassadors Show Basketball Team has performed special community events throughout the United States and 19 foreign countries.  We have worked extensively with Rotary Clubs and would be happy to provide references. You can learn more about us on our website at www.harlemambassado rs.com

The Harlem Ambassadors feature a "Harlem-style" Basketball Show, including ball handling tricks, slam dunks and hilarious comedy routines. The Harlem Ambassadors are the largest provider of entertainment services to the military having performed at over 100 bases worldwide. Our team consists of men professionals with major college and pro experience. All of our players are college educated, drug-free, and positive in appearance. In addition to their basketball skills, they bring a message to the youth of the importance of staying in school and staying off drugs.

We will be touring through Florida and wanted to see if your Rotary Club might be interested in a special fundraising event with the Harlem Ambassadors in February 2009.

Unique is that our featured comic performer is a woman player. She is a world class basketball player and a world class comedienne. She plays and competes against the men and represents a great role model for young girls.

Our fundraising package is complete for you and your organization to present a successful community event. I would be happy to also forward to you a package of references and our Promotional video.  Please let me know if you are interested in learning more about our great fundraising plan.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey Logue

Community News:

Meet Azizi!
MetroZoo’s adorable baby boy now has a beautiful name, Azizi! It means precious in Swahili. This name was suggested to us from Gabriel, a sixth grader at Falcon Cove Middle School. As a big fan of the Zoo and having recently seen Kita pregnant with Azizi, his science teacher Ms. Blagman asked him and his classmates to submit names for the contest. The zoo had almost 150 names to choose from.

Remain Competitive in a Shrinking World - Learn a Language

Louise has 30 years of experience and is Consultant and Coordinator for foreign language study abroad service.  She is in this business because of  unpleasant high school and college experiences.  Now bi and tri lingual is in vogue.  Our counterparts in other countries have this skills.  DVD’s, computer games, subliminal tapes,

Sending people abroad is an enjoyable cultural experience. Teens from her company are sent overseas to a soccer camp to emphasize lessons to live the language they are learning

To learn a foreign language you:

~ need to live it – out of the classroom.  It is an acquired skill that is not about memorizing facts.
~you must take part in everyday activities.
~you must treat it like a sport.  You can watch a sport, but if you don’t play and practice you will not be able to play.

What is your goal?

To communicate
To understand what I hear,
To give orders and answers.

Learn in a natural setting – hearing others making mistakes in a classroom isn’t the same as a natural street setting.  A controlled conversation in a classroom isn’t emersion or listening to accents.

Build up your recognition of vocabulary.  Grammar can come later.

Go to Calle Ocho and Hialeah, shop in a flea market or Macy’s or the supermarket.  Get out and use it.

Better than a textbook:

•Pick up the newspaper
•Read food labels in the useful vocubulary of the other language
•Buy or subscribe to a topical magazine to be interested in the topic and learn that vocabulary
•Total emersion – place people interested in cooking with a good cook – more interesting and less intimidating to make mistakes because the focus is fun
•Go to where it is spoken

Combine different ways to learn – private tutoring is best.

Classroom and textbook is not a security blanket for not making mistakes.

People hearing you struggle will appreciate your effort to try their language.  Check out cultural organizations’ events calendar – go to their functions in a different language.

Start with a few hours at a time and don’t wait for a block of time. Go for it!
