The district, after having three years of flat membership, has 107 new members. The reason for the boom?  The district has two new chartered clubs:  Miami MetroZoo and Miami Brickell. These count for 57 of those new members.  The next club, Bahama Sunset, has 31 members, and is about to be chartered.

Rotary’s PR Resources

“In the promotion of understanding, it is important to reach large numbers, non-Rotarians as well as Rotarians, and you cannot reach large numbers privately.” – Paul Harris

With this statement, Paul Harris recognized the importance of spreading the word about Rotary. Public relations efforts are vital to Rotary’s continued growth and service. Creating a positive image for Rotary is the responsibility of every Rotarian, both locally and globally.

http://www.catalogs.com/blog/images/pr%20buzz.jpg

Effective PR campaigns build positive, strong relationships with their audiences. But promoting Rotary’s work in the best possible way and sharing your stories effectively with the public and the media are not easy tasks.

The Rotary website offers many resources to help members and clubs disseminate the many good works done by their clubs and members to the community. www.rotary.org  provides tools on:

How to learn to write an effective press release.

http://steeleheaded.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/pressrelease.jpg

  • Get tips on working with the media.
  • Learn how to use nontraditional and new media tools to promote Rotary
  • Find tips on how to measure the success of your campaign to better prepare for future efforts
  • Link to resources, including videos, from Rotary’s global public image campaign, Humanity in Motion.

Putting Rotary in the public eye often involves more than just writing press releases and maintaining contact with local media. Rotary International provides pre-produced public service announcements (PSAs) and encourages all clubs to localize these materials for use in their communities. These PSAs focus on Rotary volunteer efforts to address critical community issues including literacy, water, hunger, and at-risk youth.

Promoting Rotary in the 21st century also means moving beyond the traditional billboard, club brochure, presentation or speech.  New technology hasn’t made these promotional forms obsolete, but it has added to the PR resources available. Blogs, podcasts and many other new media tools are available, including electronic press releases, distributed through e-mail, and uploaded videos. More than 50 video uploading and sharing sites allow you to publicize your Rotary efforts on the Web.

So, check out the many resources available at www.rotary.org and get the word out to your community about all the wonderful work Rotary is doing.

DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘BECAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

http://ourlead.net/boltonleverrotary/images/Banner.jpg

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

This is Nicole's Garden. All the plants were donated by Fred Bunnell. The project was spearheaded by Board Member Susan Lampen and volunteers from Temple Beth Am.

Average age of a child becoming independent of the parents is now 26 years old . In the USA, there is a “postponed adolescence.” Foster care children who turn 18 year olds are without a living network and need help with this transition.

Eve Ensler, author of the play the Vagina Monologue started this project in Miami .  She raised money to give them safe and affordable housing and raised $1 million in a year.  Having the play offer tickets for a fundraiser, plus other grassroots efforts, helped to purchase a building in the W. Grove in 2006 It’s called the Women Warriors aka Casa Valentina.

Those kids are so poorly prepared for independence when they age out of foster care that they can barely consider college.  They have shocking problems.  Two years behind in grade level.  Some were in the state foster care system for 15 - 17 years.

Many are found with untreated health issues - asthma, std’s, eye and dental needs.

Employees:

1-Hired a license clinical social workers avg 70 hours a week.

2-Project manager

3-Onsite manager who lives in one of the buildings

The average stay is 11 months.  The charge is $320 / month in rent with fully comprehensive services.  There is a mandatory Tuesday night life skills class.  The girl must be in school and she must delay child bearing.

This is the only organization for housing and wrap around services for girls aging out of foster care.

This organization depends on community supporters - mental health professionals, tutors, educational specialists.  They find a way to meet the need of these girls.

Success stories:

40 women have been helped in the last three years.

Foster care girls statistics:

50% of women by 18 years of age are mothers

60% by 19 years of age are mothers

61% earned GEDs or high school diplomas

Outside of Casa Valentina its 23% of foster care children are graduates.

Each year 300 kids age out of foster care in Miami-Dade County.  It’s not such a huge problem that this cannot be solved.   We have capacity for 12 girls at a time.  No housing for boys or for girls with children.

There are opportunities for change but it takes a village.

Entirely privately funded from individual donations and foundations.

Other help:

~Educate Tomorrow - mentors for girls to navigate the education system.

~Honey Shine Mentoring program covers the child until 18.

~Lotus House in Overtown helps older women who are homeless, getting off of drugs

~ CHARLIE

~SISTA is a Center for Disease Control (CDC) program that explains how to prevent STDs.

~Planned Parenthood speakers are brought to the site to discuss the  postponing of child baring.  If pregnancy occurs, then the girl is referred to another living facility.  The policy is an exterior barrier preventing them from starting a family.
