Maxene Graham, Program Chair introduced

Daniel Nguano

Ambassadorial scholar from Nigeria talking about promoting understanding in a world that has communication gaps between people

Daniel is currently working towards getting his Masters in Law at University of Miami

He’s been asked a lot of questions about Nigeria such as difficult issues like why do I get so much email from Nigeria to send money to foreign bank account?

In every society there are those whose action brings others into their web – crime has no borders.  Crime is an international citizen.

In African society in general, names are not given in isolation.  They are given based on a particular event to remember.  Daniel’s middle name means “Nothing is Impossible before God” was given to him at 6 months.  He has excelled against all odds and has achieved much in life.

He was born into a family of 11 children and he has 8 brothers and 2 sisters + Daniel.  By having many children there were many hands for the farm.  This is no longer common due to the economic hardship of so many to feed.  Out of respect for African tradition his mother was given into marriage at 15 years old.  At 16 had first child.  This is no longer common but still practiced in Northern part of Nigeria

By virtue of his visual handicap, he attended a special school and federal government sponsored high school.  Nigeria is a multi-ethnic society and schools were to unite people.  He attended the five years at the U. of Nigeria then on to one year of law school.

After studying here, he wants to return home after spending some time in Miami. One glaring difference between Miami culture and Nigeria is people’s private lives.  In Nigeria everybody knows each other’s business.  One of the greatest problems he’s had is getting to know people – here he is locked into an apt  and it’s difficult to find a niche.

Daniel’s determination to come to a foreign country to study under difficult circumstances demonstrates his courage and fortitude.
