DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘BECAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

http://ourlead.net/boltonleverrotary/images/Banner.jpg

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

Our Speaker Today,

Laura Reynolds, Executive Director

Tropical Audubon Society

Ms. Reynolds began her career in teaching and research, and learned that there is a great disconnect between what science discovers and the policy that is actually implemented. In 2005, while working on research related to climate, Ms. Reynolds was asked to go to a summit in Washington, DC on behalf of Audubon. From that experience, Ms. Reynolds realized that the greatest need for teaching is to help everyone, including our elected officials, to understand what science is telling us and how to create public and practice around those findings. She is working every day with the Audubon Society to improve our conservation practices.

Tropical Audubon Society

Established in 1947, we are a chapter of Audubon Of Florida and the National Audubon Society. The Tropical Audubon Society is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) tax-exempt organization. Our headquarters, the Doc Thomas House, is a Dade County Historic site. It occupies three sub-tropical acres of native habitat in South Miami at 5530 Sunset Drive, about a block east of Red Road.

Tropical Audubon's Purposes

Tropical Audubon Society (TAS) is a group of dedicated citizens who care about the quality of South Florida's environment.

Conservation: to work toward protection of the natural world and to promote wise stewardship of natural resources, especially native plants and animals and their habitat.

Education: to promote, among members and the public of all ages, an understanding and appreciation of nature, the environment, and ecological relationships.

Enjoyment: as a society of members with compatible interests, to enjoy together the study and protection of nature.

We believe in the wisdom of nature's design. We seek to foster and promote ecological conscientiousness in our community.

In her presentation, Ms. Reynolds discussed the mission of the Audubon Society as listed above, Conservation, Education and Enjoyment. This organization is committed to teaching people to plant and conserve green space, and to be stewards of the space. Regarding education, the Audubon Society offers 70 field trips a year to get people out into nature. They encourage people to simply enjoy nature.

Conservation meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday of every month and educational meetings for society members are held on the 2nd Wednesday (see www.tropicalaudubon.org for a full calendar).

Ms. Reynolds spoke about some of the important initiatives of the society regarding the agricultural community, Florida Bay and Biscayne Bay (including water quality) and wildlife issues. The Tropical Audubon Society is known for the “Hold the Line” campaign, to prevent development from sprawling to the west.

Some key issues are:

Turkey Point expansion- Energy and water issues are linked, and the proposed application by FP&L to build 2 new nuclear reactors will increase water demands by 90 million gallons a day. This proposal competes with the Everglades Restoration project.

Everglades Restoration: There have been 4 groundbreakings, 3 in Miami-Dade, for this project that will protect the water supply, enhance value of real estate, boost tourism, lead to recovery of the fishing industry, and improve wildlife populations and hunting opportunities. The project is expected to create 300,000 jobs.

White papers on these programs and others are available through the society website, as well as detailed information on other programs and volunteer opportunities.
