ANNOUNCEMENTS

BOARD MEETING RESULTS:
With 7 out of 16 of the board attending, no quorum was reached, so a podium meeting followed this weekly meeting.
Motion to fund paint supplies for the restoration of the bench at Dorn Avenue and 53rd Street. A committee will find out if a city permit is needed. Passed
Motion for the club to spend $5,000 to start the 2007 Art Show. Passed

SOUTH MIAMI ROTARY ART SHOW
At the 6/6/06 City Hall meeting, Mayor Horace Feliu and the Commission unanimously passed an ordinance granting the RCSM's fully owned art show the same privileges as the defunct Red Sunset Merchant's Association's Art
Show.

This means, we have 100% ownership of our own fundraiser, a permit to hold it on the last weekend in February, and the city recognizes Rotary as the producing an event with a positive track record and history.

My warmest CONGRATULATIONS to ALL of the Craftfest Committee and Mayor Horace who ushered the passage of this. We now have the city's validation. The Art Show committee will go full speed ahead on the
1,000,000 details that need to be done to run this event! SCORE!!!

ROY GONAS

RYLA, held last week, was warmly received at Stetson University where the teens stayed in the sorority houses on campus.

CLOTHING DRIVE

Simplify, Simplify, Simplify

&

UNCLUTTER YOUR LIFE WHILE DOING GOOD FOR OTHERS

Until August 2006

We are collecting Jeans for the Community Enhancement Collaboration which provides services to the homeless and to people who are having trouble making ends meet.
The program is similar to Becca's closet since they also keep a "closet" of clothing and help people pick out outfits for work, etc. They are in desperate need of Jeans and shorts for the summer for men, women, and children. Our club is organizing a June Jean Drive (but we are starting in May). You can leave them on Barbara Kornblau & Larry Sherry's porch at 9040 SW 64th Court until the last week of August or bring them to Tuesday’s Rotary meeting.

Ilaria Rundeddu,
Rotary Exchange Student
Cagliari, Italy

Host father and President-for-Life, Mike Newman did the honor of introducing our student guest.. .

There’s an old adage that many of us have heard, which says, “Youth is wasted on the young.” Thanks to its very unique R-Y-E Program, Rotary is making a significant impact to disprove that mistaken notion.

RYE is not a RI foundation program – it is paid for by the district. The district picks out the countries involved in the exchanges.

Rotary Youth Exchange has impacted the Newman family: 1) Sean, born in 1980, was a Japanese exchange student. Learning the language made him a valuable addition when he joined the US Navy. He ended up stationed in Japan learning Chinese. Soon he will be moved: to Hawaii! 2) Mark, sent to Japan learned cooking, Taiko drumming and 3) Eric, age 19, is currently studying in Brazil and speaking Portuguese.

Michael’s two years as a teenager in Israel, reinforced an international awareness. He’s since hosted four exchange students offering his nine year old son David three exchange brothers: from Holland, Germany, and Japan, and now a sister from Italy.

Arriving on August 7, 2005, hardly knowing any English, Ilaria stayed first with a Coconut Grove family, three weeks with friends and then finished her experience in the Newman household. She is grateful for the beautiful moments, the lifelong memories and the deep friendships.

Differences between school in Cagliari and Miami: Cagliari has 500 students in the high school that runs from 8:30am – 1:30pm. Students stay in one classroom throughout all years – the teachers move from classroom to classroom. This forges greater friendships. Palmetto was scary and large. It took five months to come out of her shell. While public speaking, was her greatest fear, as those in the audience can attest, she has tackled and overcome her phobia.

from the RI website:
“The most powerful force in the promotion of international understanding and peace is exposure to different cultures. The world becomes a smaller, friendlier place when we learn that all people — regardless of nationality — desire the same basic things: a safe, comfortable environment that allows for a rich and satisfying life for our children and ourselves. Youth Exchange provides thousands of young people with the opportunity to meet people from other lands and to experience their cultures. This plants the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding.”
