Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

Our Speaker Today:

Joseph Adler, Artistic Director, Gables Stage Theater

Joseph Adler is a Miami theater owner and local director. Mr. Adler studied drama at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and graduated from the Film Department at. Currently, Joseph Adler is the Artistic Director at the GableStage Theater in Coral Gables, FL. GableStage operates out of the historic Coral Gables Biltmore Hotel. He previously directed at many South Florida theatres including Coconut Grove Playhouse, New Theatre, Area Stage, Hollywood Boulevard Theatre, Players Theatre, Ruth Foreman Theatre, Florida Shakespeare Theatre, City Theatre, Hollywood Playhouse and Shores Performing Arts.

Active in South Florida's film and theatre community for many years, he has directed hundreds of television commercials and industrial films. He has won many awards, including the Clio. Since Adler became Producing Artistic Director, GableStage has been the recipient of 30 Carbonell Awards and 135 Carbonell Nominations. He has been nominated nineteen times (twelve at GableStage) and eight times won the Carbonell Award for Best Director: The Shadow Box (Coconut Grove Playhouse); The Killing of Sister George (Players Theatre); A Lesson Before Dying, James Joyce's The Dead, Edward Albee's The Goat, Frozen, The Pillowman and Lieutenant of Inishmore (GableStage).

Adler was awarded the prestigious George Abbott Award for "significant contributions to the artistic life and cultural development of greater Miami, Fort Lauderdale and the Palm Beaches." He has received many Best Director awards (Curtain Up, SunPost, New Times) and a Remy Award from the Theatre League of South Florida, as well as The Heart of the Arts Award presented by the New World School of the Arts. He was awarded the 2008 Arts and Entertainment Community Service Award, presented by the South Florida International Press Club, and in 2009 he was honored to receive the Truth Award from the Human Services Coalition.

Mr. Adler spoke to our group about the commitment of the Gables Stage theater to educational programs for public school children, especially for children who would not have access to live theater.  The theater performs Shakespeare for middle and high school students.

The Gables Stage theater operates year round, and is planning two plays for the summer. June 19 – July 18th will be Speech and Debate,  with music, a play about high school students dealing with sex, lies and online relationships, appropriate for ages 14 and up.

August 14 – September 12, the play will be Fifty Words, a play that says everything about marriage in one evening and less than 100 minutes.

They will be announcing the next season soon, with 6 plays, and this promises to be the best season ever.

Mr. Adler also mentioned that as a non-profit, the preview night for each play is sponsored by a local non-profit organization that benefits the community. All proceeds go to that organization and Rotary may want to consider hosting a preview night.

The Gables Stage plans to move to the site of the Coconut Grove Playhouse, timetable approximately 3 years, and funding is already provided by Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs.
