Our Speaker Today:
Robert Molleda, Warning Coordination Meteorologist
National Weather Service Miami Forecast Office
Mr. Molleda said that the last hurricane that directly hit South Florida was in 2005, and that was his first year in this job. So, are we becoming complacent? It has been six years since we were significantly impacted by a hurricane. Hopefully the answer is "no", since hte history of hurricane tracking over this are for 140 - 150 years shows that we are in a geographical area that gets hit. It needs to be part of our culture to be prepared.
Most hurricanes come from the East and Southeast in the early season, but then they can come from the Southwest, out of the Gulf or Yucatan Peninsula in the late season (October). Every four years, a Category 1 storm or higher has come within 75 miles of Miami. June and July are rather quiet months, August ramps up as the conditions in the tropics form in the Atlantic with favorable winds, warmer weather, convergance of conditions. South Florida has been hit most often in October.
Predictions for the 2011 Season indicate a 65% chance of an above normal season, 12 - 18 named storms, and 6 - 10 hurricanes (3 - 6 major hurricanes). These numbers reflect the best confidence forecast of the number of storms for the entire Atlantic basin from Texas to Africa. They do not necessarily reflect potential Florida impacts.
The best tracking is 7 - 14 days prior to the storm. 2010 was the third most active season on record but there was no hurricane impact in the U.S. Public response should be based on watches and warnings. A watch means that conditions are possible within 48 hours. A warning means that conditions are expected within 36 hours.
