CLOTHING DRIVE

Simplify, Simplify, Simplify

&

UNCLUTTER YOUR LIFE WHILE DOING GOOD FOR OTHERS

Until August 2006

We are collecting Jeans for the Community Enhancement Collaboration which provides services to the homeless and to people who are having trouble making ends meet.
The program is similar to Becca's closet since they also keep a "closet" of clothing and help people pick out outfits for work, etc. Bring in Jeans and shorts for the summer for men, women, and children. Our club is organizing a June Jean Drive (but we are starting in May). You can leave them on Barbara Kornblau & Larry Sherry's porch at 9040 SW 64th Court until the last week of August or bring them to Tuesday’s Rotary meeting.

The Year in Review
President Ellen Book began her final meeting address ----thanking the club for all the support received and bestowing accolades to the membership for the accomplishments of the Club.

The biggest challenges facing the club at the beginning of his term was attaining closure for the Centennial Project and the Art Show’s past partnership.

Being president is not easy for it is a long arduous task made easier with email. Three hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma threw off the schedule for all us – and we weathered the inconvenience with little else as hardships.

STUFF I’M PROUD OF:

  • At the 6/6/06 City Hall meeting, Mayor Horace Feliu’s push to get the Commission to unanimously pass an ordinance granting us the privileges of ye olde festival. Without that validation, we couldn’t have a festival.

  • Handing over a $5,000 check to the city of SM to find I was returned with a proclamation by the Mayor and the Commission stating May 2, 2006 to be “Ellen Book Day” in the city of South Miami. Thank you Linda and Horace.

IMPACT ON STUDENTS:

  • STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION – students from 17 schools participated in the fashion show from their assistance and event promotion.

  • Curtis Rubenstein, who is honorary SMRC member Karen Dorfman's grandson, received a Miami-Dade College scholarship

  • Leci Pelaez, University of Miami student discussing the completion of her SMRC press release kit as her semester assignment.

  • Ambassadorial Scholars 2006-2007:

  1. Kelsey Vaughan, living in Budapest, Hungary,

  2. Eric Powell. Brisbane, Australia

  3. THEA DUNCAN MBA IN MILAN, ITALY.

  4. BRITT LAKE STUDYING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN, S ÁFRICA.

  • ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE

  1. Therol Voche jr. - returning from France

  2. Florian Abrigal – learned a difficult life lesson about consequences

  3. ERIC NEWMAN’S YEARLONG OPPORTUNITY TO TRAVEL TO BRAZIL

  4. Ilaria – who learned much about flexibility & waiting out the difficult parts.

Once we have one year’s worth of 100% profit from the Art Show, we will have the opportunity of quadrupling our scholarships to SMHS. Thank you to Linda for her work with “Take Stock in Children” - Martha Gutierrez.

CONTRIBUTIONS
$100 contribution to Rotary International for the Rotary Rose Bowl Parade Float.
$500 contribution to the District’s Youth Ethics Initiative.
DONATIONS TOTALLING $5,895.00 FOR THE VICTIMS OF RITA WERE SENT TO DISTRICT 6220 IN SEPTEMBER. THANK YOU ANONYMOUS.
$250 TO FINANCIALLY ASSIST THE BANGKOK 2006, GLOBAL LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE PROJECT (GLSP) SUPPORTED BY THE INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS HONOR SOCIETY AT FIU
Thank you Doug

Being fiscally conservative, leaves the club financially secure with enough seed money to begin the art show solo.

FIELD TRIP
CHIHULY @ FAIRCHILD TROPICAL from Williamson Cadillac’s generousity

One of the things I am not going to miss is the freedom to sit at any table. I spent five years in this club, mingling amongst the members and being tied to the “head” table works against my grain.

My advice to our future President, focus on what you feel is the most important aspects to accomplish and get those done. You cannot control timing; some goals you must start from seed and let them take fruition for future presidents. I benefited from those who came before me and your actions will result in praise for future Presidents who fulfill plans begun in your year. I pass the gavel on to you with my best wishes and continued support.

At the June 2004 Council on Legislation was item No. 04-18, "to allow attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity." if a member misses a meeting, in order to receive attendance credit, he or she can go online. This offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club. To earn an attendance credit, Rotarians usually log on to the Web site, read online material on a range of subjects, post comments, and submit a form to the club secretary.

Today’s Encore Presentation…

Brenda Alford
Jazz Singer / Elementary School Teacher
balford@dadeschools.net

Pansy introduced Brenda:

If music be the food of love, play on.
Give me excess of it, that surfeiting,
The appetite may sicken and so die…
These words from William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” are a very fitting way to introduce to some, and present to others, today’s speaker.

Our guest is the lovely, talented vocalist, composer, and educator, Mr. Brenda Alford, who is no stranger to most of us. We first met her on October 18th, last year when she was our speaker for the day. We were so impressed with her performance and presentation then, that I thought an encore would be in order as a grand Finale for the year 2005-2006.

Ms. Alford began her musical career in 1978 in Baltimore, MD, just three days after meeting and talking with the great jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald. Since then, she has performed jazz, pop, and gospel in concerts in N. America, the Caribbean, and Asia. Ms. Alford has worked with the greatest names in jazz: Pete Minger, Stanley Turrentine, Sonny Stitt, Philly Jo Jones, Sam Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Keter Betts, Lou Donaldson, Ron Carter, Al Foster, and Cyrus Chestnut to name a few.

As a recording artist, she has recorded with jazz piano legend Horace Silver on the Blue Note Label, and performed with saxophone innovator Flip Phillip. She sings on Pianist Billy Marcus’ cd “Hamp” and at Mr. Hampton’s request, performed with Billy and a S. Florida all-star band at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, ID for his 90th birthday.

Her personal recordings include “Brenda Alford Live at Morgan State,” “Last Night in Baltimore,” and most recently “My Favorite Things.”

Brenda singing Gershwin’s Summertime

Well, she is also a movie actress…starring in Jon Water’s “Hairspray” and Barry Livingston’s “Avalon.”

Brenda resides in Miami with her family. She attended UM as a jazz vocal performance major. Her award-winning compositions have been performed by that university’s jazz vocal ensemble…JVI under the direction of Larry Lapin.

Ms. Alford is a public school teacher and was honored by Dade County and the City of Homestead as Teacher of the Year.

Happiness is giving back to the community from which we prosper. Brenda has found happiness by coupling her music with her teaching career. Alone, each of these talents does not fulfill. Together, she finds her calling.

The last weekend of July, she will be performing at the Sunday brunch @ the Ritz Carlton, 1 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach, FL 33139 and also at Emeril’s Jazz Brunch in the San Moritz Tower of the Loews Miami Beach Hotel, 1601 Collins Ave, Miami Beach.
