Congratulations to Jim Barker!

We heartily congratulated Jim Barker as he was recognized by the Coral Gable Chamber of Commerce as the recipient of the George E. Merrick Award of Excellence.

For over 40 years, Jim has excelled in his signature areas of expertise: community relations, marketing and public relations. He has applied his talent to every sector of Coral Gables and the community at large. Barker served as Chairman of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce from 1972-73 and his unwavering focus on the community, most notably during his long tenure as a Coral Gables City Commissioner, was to serve its people of Coral Gables.

The award was established to celebrate and recognize a true visionary leader who has made a significant impact and set standards for the cultural celebration, promotion, beautification, preservation and economic growth of the City of Coral Gables.

Presentation from Pansy

Pansy Graham presented our club with a beautiful plaque and began a new tradition for      our club. She asked that the plaque be updated each year with the inscription of the name of the new president for the installation or first meeting of each new year. The words on the plaque are:

Pursuant to the guidelines established in the By-Laws of the Rotary Club of South Miami, District 6990, we hereby recognize the following persons as having served as Club President for the year specified under each name.

Excellence is doing ordinary things extraordinarily well

http://ourlead.net/boltonleverrotary/images/Banner.jpg

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

Our Speaker Today:

Dr. Terrell Manyak

Dr. Terrell Manyak earned his Masters in Public Administration at Syracuse University and PhD in Political Science and Management from  UCLA. He worked for the Alaska State Legislature in helping the state make the transition from a territory to statehood. Dr. Manyak also worked for the US State Department to teach local government at the University of Khartoum and help develop a new constitution for the country.  He worked for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to develop new Human Resource Management Systems. Dr. Manyak returned to academic life by joining the faculty at Nova Southeastern University in 1991.

He joined Rotary in 1983, chaired the Ambassadorial Scholar program while in California, was club president in Lewiston, Idaho, and president again of the Davie/Cooper City club. Dr. Manyak served as Assistant Governor for District 6990 for five years. He was awarded a Rotary Foundation Teaching Grant for 2008-2009 to work at Uganda Christian University and conducted research that will soon appear in the African Studies Quarterly and Gender and Management.

Dr. Manyak spoke to our group about his experience at Uganda Christian University, and shared with us a film that was made by the students as a going-away gift, documenting their way of life during this extraordinary year. Marlene Manyak accompanied her husband to the meeting and is also featured in the film.

She invites serious entrepreneurs from anywhere (think Florida) to present their businesses at weekly 1M1M online strategy roundtables: http://www.sramanamitra.com/entrepreneurship-strategy-roundtables where Sramana Mitra, a veteran Silicon Valley strategist (her mentor and role model who created 1M1M) listens .and gives her feedback to each entrepreneur individually in a space of 15 minutes or so.

We learned that the university is very different in Uganda than the United States. Students are used to the lecture method, and it is harder to get students to open up and give their views, but eventually, they did open up. While Marlene had no official work, she became involved in the community, joining the choir, working with the children’s library, and joining women’s organizations. She is writing a book about her experiences.

Dr. Manyak had 3 tasks on this trip.

1.    Teaching – He taught undergraduate and graduate students. There were many faculty who are trying to obtain doctoral level, so he held seminars on how to publish and write dissertations.

2.    Rotary – He learned that Rotary is alive and well in Uganda, and Rotarians are doing exciting things, such as working on building a school and installing trees

3.    Research – To get the sabbatical, he had to complete research on local government problems in Uganda

Dr. Manyak is grateful to Rotary for this opportunity and  he was able to see how Rotary makes a difference in the lives of others. While participating in a program for children with AIDS, he learned that some walked 10 miles to participate in the event. Rotary money is guarded closely in this area, and every cent is spent on programs that were specified and makes a difference.
