DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘BECAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or
after, the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to
http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

Our Speaker Today:

R. Kenneth Bluh

"Florida Power & Light Invades US 1"

R. Kenneth Bluh is the political columnist for Community Newspapers' 14 municipal editions in South Florida. Ken has been writing his column almost every week since 1999 and, to date, has written 699 columns. He also writes a weekly blog, "Kenneth's Commentary Miami/Tallahassee and Beyond". His blog can be found at: www.rkbluh.com

Mr. Bluh was educated at the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School. He has been a licensed mortgage lender since his discharge from the United States Air Force following college. Ken is a member of the mortgage banking team of American Bancshares Mortgage LLC in Coral Gables. He can be contacted at kenneth@rkbluh.com or at (786) 247-0547.

Mr. Bluh has served as President of the Economic Society of South Florida, Chairman of the Board of the Center for Family and Children Enrichment, President of the National Association of Real Estate Appraisers, Miami Chapter, and a Board Member of the Leukemia Society of South Florida and the Mortgage Bankers Association of Miami.

Ken spoke to us about Florida Power & Light's (FPL) desire to build a high voltage overhead transmission line from Turkey Point to Downtown Miami. He stated the reason for this project is that FPL would like to build 2 new power plants at Turkey Point and the Regulators will not allow them to do so without the capacity to distribute the power. Cities from Cutler Bay to Coral Gables have banned together to request that FPL place these powerlines underground. With Mayor Lerner of Pinecrest and Mayor Stoddard of South Miami taking the lead in this charge, they were able to fund a study to provide an alternative solution for the placement of the power lines. There will be a ruling next September as to which of 3 options will be instituted.

 Additional Guest Speaker:

We were also joined by Charles Sealey, CEO of Doctors Hospital, Nassau, Bahamas. He was here representing 9 Rotary Clubs in the Bahama Islands. This year the Clubs are celebrating 50 years of Rotary in the Bahamas. As the original Club was chartered by the Rotary Club of South Miami, they would like to include us in their celebration. There will be a series of events, including a Marathon and Ball. More details to come!
