http://ourlead.net/boltonleverrotary/images/Banner.jpg

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

Our Speaker Today:

Roy Gonas, Eastern Europe, Our Misconceptions

Our own Roy Gonas spoke to our group today and shared his experiences from a recent trip to Eastern Europe. Roy prefaced his remarks by sharing comments from a delegation of Ukranian judges who visited South Florida last year. Their trip was sponsored by the Open World Program, and the judges who visited Miami (as opposed to some of the other locations) were impressed by Miami, and saw that we respected their views, feelings and jokes. They indicated that their peers were envious of their experience in Miami. They had a misconception that Americans are not as open and friendly as we are.

Roy, and his wife Roselyn, went to the Ukraine, and Roy had the opportunity to explore his roots. During their visit, they went to Kiev, and Roy did have the opportunity to represent FIU School of Law for potential joint projects with the university. Roy visited the University of Kiev Institute of International Relations and had the opportunity to lead a class, discussing international arbitration. He was impressed by the facility as well as the students. They all were fluent in English and were an impressive group.

Roselyn had the opportunity to visit a rehab center for survivors of Chernobyl that was established in 2001. She learned that people did not know for two weeks what had happened at Chernobyl. The psychologists at this center focus on long-term treatment, while in the US, we are more focused on short-term treatment. They had an opportunity to discuss how they can collaborate and learn from each other.

Their next stop was to Lviv, and country air travel was good. Staff were courteous and services were prompt. Roy visited the village that dates back to 1360, where his mother was born, and visited the church where his grandfather was baptized.

In the 1990’s, Rotary began a program, the “Gift of Life”, for young children in Lviv who are in need of heart surgery. Initially, children were examined in Lviv, but now surgeries are performed there.

Roy described Lviv as a town that is sophisticated, yet has Italian renaissance buildings going back to the 14th and 15th centuries, and is clean, inexpensive, and known for fashion and beautiful women.

They continued to Krakow and Copenhagen to complete their trip. Roy impressed upon the group the meaning of having the opportunity to research his roots, and the warmth and culture of this region.
