The Geography Contest Drawing:

The 6th grader’s contest’s last day to turn in entries is over.  Jennifer Dewsnap visits the club next week to pull the winner

Jennifer Dewsnap advised that the geography contest based on atlases the club presented to several hundred students has been completed, and that one student correctly answered all the questions on the open book test.  Jennifer will notify her this week that she has won and will receive an IPOD. There are many smaller prizes for other entrants.

Jennifer is leaving the Club as she has been reassigned to the main downtown library as Business & Science Manager.  She says that after feeling things out at her new job, she will definitely try to come back.

Mike Mills presented her with a Club Service award for all of her work with the dictionary and atlas projects.

Entertainment books are COMING!  Linda Kaplan explained that they sell for $30, of which $15 comes to the Club.

Mike announced that an investigation is underway

concerning a possible new venue for our meetings.

Several places are being considered but more information is needed before a decision can be made.

Linda and Asaad are part of this ad hoc committee.

Program Chair Darrell Downs introduced Rolf, who grew up in Guatemala and was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Guatemala Sur.  In 1982 he became a Coral Gables Rotarian and has held nearly every club position.  He is a Paul Harris Fellow and holds a perfect attendance record of 41 years.

“Mine Sniffing in Sri Lanka”

In 2003, Sri Lanka requested 12 dogs to help identify the thousands and thousands of buried land mines remaining from 20 years of civil war.

The Rotary Club of Coral Gables learned of this need and of a group that works to fill it, the Marshall Legacy Institute, and decided to raise funds to sponsor a dog.

The dogs are bred and trained in the US and then sent to Sri Lanka for training with their Sri Lankan army handlers.   Kirk Landon helped the club reach its goal of $20,000, so of course the sponsored dog was named for him.

Rolf was part of the team that flew to Colombo and watched mine sniffing dogs at work.

Each canine sniffs an area 50 yards wide. When a mine is located, the dog sits and waits for its handler to come and place a flag on the spot.  Then army specialists remove the mines, taking them to a safe location for destruction.

The process is slow, and only 10 mines were discovered in three hours.  We were informed that it may take 20 years to remove them all.

Most  victims are women and children and each mine detected and destroyed saves lives and limbs.

Coral Gables Rotarians are now working to sponsor a second dog.
