·         Our club will be co-sponsoring a Rotary Exchange student with the Pinecrest and Coral Gables Clubs. Sebastian (but we will call him Philip) arrives on August 17th at MIA at 5:45 PM. Doreen and Britt will be there to welcome him, and it would be terrific if other members of our club can join them.

·         John Sorgie distributed the ticket booklets for Football Mania!!

This is the 14th year for this fundraiser. Each RCSM member needs to sell 10 booklets and 496 booklets will be printed. Our 2009 sales raised $2,234.00 for the club. The money is used by the club to send to Rotary International Foundation. It is the money used when we honor our members with Paul Harris Fellowships.

Quick sales line: Consider making a donation of $10 to support the RCSM. This is a good cause AND you have 15 opportunities to win $50. That’s 59 cents a week for a chance to win.

Last year’s best seller : Ed Fischer. Next, Mike Mills and Karen Vassell

·         Karen Vassell and Linda Kaplan told us about their trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica last week as part of our project with Caribbean Charities for Children. They went to Jamaica and held a picnic for the children. It was a heartwarming and gratifying experience. They had a very positive experience with the local Rotary Clubs, and had been in touch with some of them ahead of time to find volunteer assistance. Karen attended Rotary meetings and at the last minute found additional volunteers to come out and help. Local clubs are now working with volunteers to get dental care for these children and to develop a library for the schools they attend. Hopefully more members of our club can participate next year.

·         We all wished Stan Zeltsman a very happy birthday!!

DID YOU MISS A MEETING ‘BECAUSE YOU WERE AWAY?

http://ourlead.net/boltonleverrotary/images/Banner.jpg

Our club goal is 100% Attendance!

If you miss a meeting, it can be made-up within 2 weeks, before or after, of the missed meeting date.

For online make-ups:

Visit www.ri6990.org to find a club to make up an absence.

Attendance credit for a 30-minute interactive club Web site activity offers an alternative to making up a meeting at another club.

To earn this credit, Rotarians log on to the site, read up on a range of subjects, post comments, & submit a form to the club secretary.

How to do a Make-Up On-Line via Rotary eClub One?

Perfect attendance is now possible for every Rotarian with computer access. Rotary’s eClub One is a full-service online charted Rotary Club. Meetings operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. What an easy way to make up for a meeting that you have missed! During the last Rotary year, Rotary eClub One welcomed more than 120,000 visitors from 161 countries. Of these, about 800 per week participated in one of eClub One’s meeting programs and applied for make-up credit.

Here’s what you have to do to earn make up credit. Go to http://www.rotary.org/RIdocuments/en_pdf/eclub_list.pdf

It is mandatory that you spend at least 30 minutes on the website for qualify for a make-up credit. (Remember Rotarians are guided by the principles of the 4 Way Test).

For make-ups anywhere around the world when traveling internationally: http://rotary.org/support/clubs/index.html

Our Speaker Today:

Douglas Maymon, District Governor RI6990

Douglas R. Maymon was with DSI, a division of American Media, for 29 years.  During that time he functioned in a number of managerial positions and last served as the company’s Director of Marketing Services.

Prior to that he was a marketing executive for a food broker and orange juice manufacturing concern.  Doug attended Nova University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and attended the Graduate School of Business Administration at Florida International University.  He served in the Civil Air Patrol (United States Air Force Auxiliary) for nine years where he held several senior command and staff positions.

In early 1988, Doug was invited to join the Rotary Club of Pembroke Pines, Florida.  During his tenure in the Club he held numerous leadership positions including that of Club President for 1991-1992.  He was named the Club’s Rotarian of the Year for 1989-1990 and was presented the Four-Way Test Award for 1992-1993 for his humanitarian service.

Doug joined the Rotary Club of Weston in 1994.  He has served in multiple leadership roles including those of Club Secretary (1997-1998) and Club President (1999-2000).  He was chosen to be the Club’s Rotarian of the Year for 1994-1995 and also for 2005-2006.

He has been active on the District level as well, having been an Assistant Governor for three years.  In addition, he has served as District Secretary, Aide to the Governor, District Foundation Annual Giving Chair, and twice Chair of the District Conference. Doug has also served as the District Chief of Staff and has twice chaired both the Foundation Major & Planned Gifts Committee as well as the Continuity & Governance Committee, while also serving on other District Committees.  He was selected as the District Rotarian of the Year for 2004-2005 and serves as Governor for 2010-2011.

Doug belongs to several Rotary Fellowships including Rotarians On The Internet (ROTI), International Computer Users Fellowship of Rotarians, and Rotarians on Social Networks.  He is currently the Zone 34 Director for the Rotary Global History Fellowship and has served on the Board of Directors for the International Fellowship of Rotarian Editors & Publishers.

Doug has served as the District Rotary Leadership Institute Director (where he is also a certified instructor) and also as the RLI Sunshine Division Promotions Director.  He will chair the RLI Sunshine Division (Florida, Georgia, Caribbean) in 2012-2014.  Doug is a Rotary Foundation Major Donor, a Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member, a Rotary Foundation Benefactor, a Member of the Paul Harris Society, and a Member of the Rotary Foundation Bequest Society.  He received The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service in March 2005.

Doug was born in Baltimore, Maryland and moved to the South Florida area in 1956.  His hobbies include golf and poker.  He is married to the lovely Deborah Ann (Past Assistant Governor / Past District Secretary).  Deborah also is a staunch Foundation supporter.  They have one son, Brad, who is a developer with a civilian defense contractor and is married to the marvelous Misty Lee, plus one grandson, Tyler.  Doug and Debbie are avid football fans and in their fleeting spare time enjoy fine wine, classic rock music, and old movies.

Remarks to our group:

Doug encouraged members of our club to participate in the District Conference, November 11-15th, and assured us of a good itinerary, excellent rates, and to book soon – cabins are going quickly. He also let us know about the upcoming Rotary Day with the Miami Dolphins, planned for December 5th. Five hundred tickets are available, and there is a good choice of seats (not only upper deck) and there will be a tailgate party (an opportunity for season ticket holders to join fellow Rotarians before the game).

Our theme for this year is “Building Communities and Bridging Continents”. Doug commented on the fact that the theme was selected as it speaks to everyone and is easy to remember. Rotary is about installing life in communities and working with partners. Rotary might not be the best “first responder”, but we are there when everyone else leaves. Rotary provides an ongoing process and strives to change the footprint of a nation. We share resources and Rotary adds value to peoples’ lives, from group study exchange and exchange student programs, we promote the exchange of ideas. He also addressed the importance of the Polio Plus initiative and its lifesaving work.
