Information from July’s Foundation Board Meeting:
Roselyn Smith Gonas requested from the Club Foundation $ 500 towards electronic equipment she will use and then locally donate.

The American Psychological Association August 10-13 in New Orleans is having its annual conference, and she has been invited to present to some of the mental health professionals who have been "on the ground" since preparations began for Katrina. In planning for my presentation I learned the "multi-media conference room" I will be presenting in at Tulane DePaul Hospital now consists of 50 chairs, a stage, and a podium (they might have an amplification system, but I am not sure). Per my contact with Peoples Health, a community medical and mental health provider, it turns out FEMA doesn't replace electronic equipment for health care providers because they don't consider it necessary for the practice. While that is technically true in terms of the provision of care, most billing is now done electronically and having working computer equipment is crucial to surviving in practice. Of course that is not the only thing that is difficult for providers trying to re-establish themselves, but apparently many providers are throwing in the towel and leaving the area because it is just too difficult to get things back up and running "normally."

They are still having so many problems, Even the NOLA public health department doesn't have the portable electronic equipment necessary to efficiently track evacuees during the next storm, god forbid there is one during this season. That of course means the process of evacuating people (that is, recording them manually) will be slowed and more people put in harms way. What a mess.

As I shared with you, I am hopeful I will be able to take a laptop and projector to New Orleans to donate to the public health department, or a non-profit, such as Peoples Health.

The Club Foundation has voted unanimously to contribute $ 500 to this cause.

The following comments from RI President William "Bill" Boyd are taken from a speech he delivered at the 2006 International Assembly.

As Rotarians, we are not content to let matters stay the way they have always been, in our clubs or in our communities. We are not content with the status quo, and we do not look at a problem only to say someone else will solve it. We are the ones who ask why not us? We are the ones with the skills and the desire to build a better future. And we are the ones who must Lead the Way.

Today’s Program…

Introducing today’s program speaker…

Assistant District Governor Rick Davis

Covering the clubs of

Coconut Grove,Coral Gables,Key Biscayne,Miami, & South Miami

A member of the Miami Rotary Club, ADG Davis did the honors introducing a two-term Asst DG, Past District Secretary, PHF multiple recipient who is originally from Orlando where he worked for Disney for 13 years and moved to Key West to work for FedEx. Now he is our district’s leader…

Jack Martin, District Governor

jackmartin@mail.com / http://jackmartin.blogspot.com

His four principle goals:

  1. Net 2 members,
  2. $120 per member per year, EREY
  3. 2 hands-on service projects,
  4. double the utilization of the district’s website: www.rotary6990.org

from our DG’s blog:

  1. A very important pre-qualifier for submission of the application for the presidential citation is non-negotiable. To be recognized as worthy of this year’s citation a club must “develop and implement a membership recruitment plan to achieve a net increase of one member by 1 April 2007.” This district’s membership goal is “net two” new members because, frankly, I believe in the capability of the clubs in this district to do just that. I will, however, be justly proud of each and every club that achieves the distinction of receiving the presidential citation. If a club elects to take the planning guide and, along with the presidential citation brochure, “pin it (in this case – them) on the wall” for the balance of the Rotary year it will happen! I can feel it.

    FACTS:
    33,000 CLUBS
40% OF MEMBERS ARE OVER THE AGE OF 60
10% OF MEMBERS ARE OVER THE AGE OF 40

Attrition is 10% - we need to net 2 members to stay ahead of the losses due to retirements, deaths, etc.

  2. Every Rotarian Every Year, or EREY

This appeal for support of The Rotary Foundation is misunderstood by some. It simply means that each Rotarian needs to participate in the programs of the Foundation each year and lend financial support at whatever level the individual is comfortable with establishing.

The goal in District 6990 in Rotary Year 2006-2007 is a hoped-for $120 per person but there are many ways of reaching that goal. Rotarians giving at least $100 to the Foundation each year are recognized as “Rotary Foundation Sustaining Members”. That, however, isn’t to be confused with “Every Rotarian Every Year”.

While some Rotarians cannot commit financially to $100 per year, EREY suggests that EVERY Rotarian make a gift of some amount to The Rotary Foundation; hence, Every Rotarian Every Year.

The clubs in District 6990 that make the biggest financial impact on The Rotary Foundation each year are those that do not rely solely upon the gifts of club members. These clubs dedicate all of the proceeds from one or more club fundraising projects each year or, some, a smaller percentage of every fundraiser to The Rotary Foundation. This has a dramatic impact on Foundation support.

  3. Two hands-on service projects per club.

  4. www.rotary6990.org contains all that you might expect, such as a listing of where clubs meet and committee lists and some things that you might not expect: in-depth information that is district focused on membership efforts and The Rotary Foundation.

Within the web site resides a database that contains all essential information on each club. Members of Rotary clubs in District 6990 can update and maintain their own data, clubs can build their own calendars and committee lists. Everyone’s picture can even be included.

More from our DG’s blog:

Two anchor events of the Rotary year:

District Conference in Key West in November (see above) and The Rotary Leadership Institute ($85 per session) making its first appearance in District 6990 this year. That in itself, a first-time affair, is a bit of an issue because people really don’t know what to expect.

As a graduate of the program I can tell you from personal experience that participants will take part in a very thorough phased training regimen that provides extremely valuable education on Rotary in a wide array of topics ranging from membership issues to service projects, leadership development and The Rotary Foundation, and that’s just for starters.

Right now, I believe, people perceive the event date of August 26th to be a long way off. In reality it is just less than four weeks . . . as I prepare this blog entry. Understand, though, that registration closes on August 18th. That is a very firm and final date.

If you’ve read about the Institute you understand that to graduate from the program you must complete three separate days of training. While classes are held in other parts of the State of Florida I am trying to make this convenient for everyone by arranging a venue right in our own backyard.

Registration is available online at www.rlitraining.org. Please don’t delay! In addition to registering yourself take the opportunity to promote this in your club and with your Rotarian friends in other clubs.

We have a unique opportunity to spend this first in-district Rotary Leadership Institute with dozens of Rotarians from District 7020 in the Bahamas and Western Caribbean that have already registered for the session. Clubs that are interested in the “Think Caribbean” project now have a ready-made opportunity to spend some time while at the Institute networking with the Rotarians from clubs throughout the islands and establishing the groundwork for a “twinning” project.

Promoting Rotary
Two years ago, Rotary assembled a Public Image Resource Group made up of Rotarians with working knowledge of delivering a message to the masses. Work began to develop tools that could be put in the hands of Rotarians to assist individuals and clubs in perhaps penetrating
the media monolith.

Several months ago the first tangible result of the Public Image Resource Group’s efforts arrived . . . and what a valuable kit it is:
A Guide to Public Image Projects.

This glossy folder focuses on five steps to promoting the principles and programs of Rotary using print media, radio, television and billboards. Also included; a listing of resources that can be ordered either at no cost or very low cost via the Rotary International website.

Eric (19) returned from a year of high school, with the Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE), in Londrina, Brazil, where he learned Portuguese and developed a real love of the game of soccer. Mark (21) is studying Environmental Science at USF in Tampa, spent 2 weeks on the road to New York, playing concerts with his band “Amberly Drive” (www.myspace.com/amberlydrive). Shawn (26) has completed a tour of duty with the Navy in Japan and after a short visit home to Florida in August he starts a new tour of duty in Hawaii for 3 years. He recently qualified for a promotion to E-6. (Shawn and Mark lived in Japan with RYE in ’98 & ’03). The whole family will have a reunion in Tampa the first week of August where they will celebrate for Shawn and David’s birthdays.
