Our Speaker Today:
Mike Mills "Private Investigations"
Mr. Mills served with the City of South Miami Police Department from 1977 to 2010 in every position and commanded each of the 3 divisions. He retired with the rank of Assistant Chief with several particular accomplishments under his belt such as, leading a 10 office response team to NYC on September 13, 2001, Manager of the Year in 1999, Emergency Management Coordinator, established the community emergency response team and community traffic saftey teams, and organized participation in the U.S. Customs Blue Lightening Strike Force.
Mr. Mills is a graduate of University of Louisville's Southern Police Institute, is Past President of the Rotary Club of South Miami, and is a member of international and local Police Chief and Licensed Investigator Associations. Mr. Mills is currently Senior Investigator (licensed and armed) with Pat Diaz & Associates, conducting private investigations for clients in South Florida.
The topic of today's discussion is private investigations. Private Investigators do many things such as background checks, following people, investigating domestic claims, insurance fraud, identity theft, just to name a few. Anyone can conduct an investigation, however an investigator that is going to be compensated must be licensed. The execption would be a full time employee of an organization (i.e. law firm.) To obtain a license there are several requirements: investigative experience, background check, and passing the examination. If you have no previous law enforcement/investigative experience you can intern under a P.I. for 2 years to satisfy the experience requirement.
Some examples of clients that Mr. Mills has worked on include being hired by a business owner to investigate a tenant that claimed to have fallen on water on the premises. At the threat of a lawsuit, Mr. Mills was hired to investigate the claim and document the alleged facts. He often is hired by attorneys to locate witnesses. In order to find a P.I. you can look up state licenses and also want to be sure that the individual has experience in the issue of concern to you.
For more information you can contact Mr. Mills at millsmilke@aol.com
